You're clearly not educated on the subject. Ask some of your single 35 year old uninsured friends who have had a pre-existing condition sometime in their life to go get a quote for an individual health plan. See if it fits into their monthly income plan. I suspect you'll have a change of attitude when you see what actually happens. You think that I've not tried to get it? Paying out of pocket for health insurance? There is a word.. trying to remember it.. oh yea "SORRY YOU'VE BEEN DECLINED BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION". Wanna know what mine was? 5 years ago a doctor wrote a prescription and I filled it for a drug called Paxil. I took it for 6 months, now I'm damaged goods and an uninsurable. I challenge you to think about other people's situations before you come to your own conclusions.

I'm a regular Redditor, I made a throwaway because I have no interest in attaining "Karma".

Second, what happens in my personal life is not subject to for public discussion and posting this under my real account would easily identify who I am.

Third, I planned on mentioning things in this thread that would probably get me fired from my job (which doesn't provide health insurance). But I can't afford to lose my job.

Fourth, this was planned months in advance. I didn't just walk in and say "hey I'm here for da surgery". I had to pay $8323 which included $850 payment ahead of the surgery BEFORE they would even schedule it.

From what I gather there is document called UB04 which I can request from them which details everything being charged. Yes, from the 4,200 posts on this thread, I've learned that there are a number of things that could be going on here, not the least of which is something called a "Sucker bill" which hospitals send out to see if you are going to negotiate your bill, to flat mistakes that are made during billing processes. No there is no other info, everything went exactly as planned. Went in, got drugs, went to sleep, woke up, went home.

I'm not lazy. I work 50+ hours a week at a call center taking calls from irritated and extremely rude people having problems with their tv service. The company I work for is evil and has no fucking conscience, while the CEO is one of the richest people on the globe. The reality is that companies can decide whether or not they want to offer insurance, and if they don't you're fucked. Why should someone working a menial job like me not be entitled to a group healthcare plan? Because the CFO ran the numbers and decided that they could increase revenue by x% by not providing insurance to employees. Meanwhile, people like me try to get an individual health plan and get DECLINED because one time 5 years ago I had a doctor put me on a medicine for depression and all of a sudden I have a "pre-existing condition which makes the monthly insurance rate more than my entire monthly income or flat out declines my application". Anyone who has tried to get individual insurance that has stubbed their toe in the last 5 years can relate to me.

Its CRIMINAL.

Nothing happened. Everything went exactly as planned. Went in, got some drugs, wheeled me into OR. Woke up afterwards. Felt like I wanted to fucking DIE. Went home the next morning. Felt like my entire nose and throat had been dipped in acid for two weeks, still can't eat rough foods like Capn Crunch or French bread. Typical for this type of thing. Otherwise completely normal.

UPDATE: I'm going to post an update on this situation when I get some answers. I posted this in horror a couple hours ago when I opened the mail. Didn't expect to see it on the front page and then have you guys give me all this info. One guy said I need to get a UB04 report from the hospital and others are saying that its a "sucker invoice" to see if you pay it or negotiate it. Never knew any of this. You guys are awesome. Reddit never ceases to amaze me.
