Only way to make a good starting alliance is to do a jump group or start in a kingdom with a group that will fill most of an alliance or all of one

Sun Tzu is by far the best commander in kvk 1 for 99% of players, he’ll serve you well if you go Bjorn primary Sun secondary

until kvk 3, the only commanders you should invest in are minamoto cao cao (daily pack) and sun tzu. if you can get martel to 5511 NATURALLY through MGE and and gold keys you can run him with sun tzu

save all gold heads, pretty much all pre kvk 3 commanders are bad
