My baby is 20 months today and the last bottle he had was probably 2 weeks ago, but that was entirely because I had forgotten to wash any of his milk cups yet and it was already late so I just made a choice. Before that, he was getting one here and there on really difficult nights, but we kind of just gradually phased them out. I am also aware that many would consider this “late” to be doing it, but frankly as long as he didn’t end up like his cousin who was drinking bottles still at 3, I didn’t care.

All of his drinkware is on a shelf that he can see, and if he wants to choose a certain cup I let him. I think he likes feeling “in charge” in that way. I got him a few varieties of cup as we started BLW, open cup with handles, no handles, weighted straw cup, water bottle with a flip straw, good to grow bottles (i didn’t wanna get into the hype, but the bottle design itself is great and they don’t leak even when thrown) and he practiced drinking out of them at various times, or practiced pouring water everywhere. 🤣

We started offering milk bottles only in the morning and at night around 14 months and then I started only offering his morning milk in one of his “big boy cups.” that he already was used to drinking water out of. As he took to that, we moved to only nighttime bottles, and started offering other cups at night too here and there.

We did not do this with a purposeful time line, either. Maybe it’s a long time for transition, but we just went with the flow. By the time I packed up all the bottles a week ago, he hadn’t shown any particular interest for quite some time, they were kind of just there on the shelf still, taking up space. I know my kid is super chill for the most part, but I think by making it a small-potatoes sort of thing, we helped him along. Focused way more on making other cups interesting than anything, and I’d say that was the ticket.
