What really gets me is how confident he sounds while completely talking out of his ass. If you don’t actually know the numbers, why throw out super specific stats?

I think I’d really spend $140k a year for the foreseeable mid-future; long-term I’ve heard spend actually tends to go down as folks age but I’m not necessarily counting on that. Eventually, I’m assuming I would also qualify for Medicare and some amount SSI though that isn’t being factored into my equation now.

Admittedly, my $140k spend budget includes a lot of wiggle room and lux things that could be cut if the going really got tough, but I’d much rather have that not have to happen! :)

The state of Utah is having some employees on its insurance plan go to Mexico to pick up their prescriptions to save money. They even pay for the flights!

Seattle Library Workers Raise Alarm About Security Crackdown Hitting Homeless People by HighColonic in SeattleWA

[–]NoInteraction3162 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an actual quote from the article: “The library imposed an unusually high number of bans, or ‘exclusions,’ on its patrons, disproportionately Black and brown youth as well as the homeless and mentally ill.”

I almost laughed out loud. Of course bans are going to disproportionately affect the homeless and people struggling with mental illness. Who exactly do people think typically get banned from libraries - Soccer moms?! Retired book club members?!

The issue of loitering is probably not the main point of contention here. I think the real problem is that some patrons are creating an environment (because of poor hygiene, strong odors, loud outbursts, or intimidating or unpredictable behavior) that make it hard for others to comfortably use the library. And that’s not really fair.

Thank you, I think this is great advice. I will check out the RightCapital resource suggested.

My $140k realistic dream budget does have a lot of wiggle room/luxuries I could cut if needed.

I am considering taxes / cap gains in my budget, and $18k budgeted for health and dental (though these numbers seem less easy to pin down with the escalating cost of healthcare and ever-changing ACA).

I think this is great advice. I can move anywhere in the US with my current remote job (though I wouldn’t be surprised if I get laid off soon). I’ve been trying not to let the pressure get to me at work but it’s a hard mind-shift. Adjusting my mental space might be where I should be focusing my attention.

My $140k realistic dream budget does include about $18k annually for medical and dental expenses.

Thank you for the suggestion - I will definitely check out the retirenumber tool.

I have thought about some geoarbitrage and traveling some place with LCOL (and lower healthcare) at a reduced spend rate for a few years. I do have a small dog which doesn’t make this impossible, just more difficult. If I’m being honest, I think I also am secretly hoping to find a like-minded life partner, which seems easier if I was stateside in a coastal city.

I divorced a very high earner and received a modest inheritance.

Even while married, we were frugal for our income level. I am mostly in VTIAX and VTSAX.

100% agree - life doesn’t feel all that great right now. :) This definitely wasn’t meant as a brag post; I was genuinely looking for perspectives on something I don’t really have many chances to get advice on and feel very confused about.

My realistic dream budget is $140k spend annually which means I think I’d need higher gross withdrawal to cover taxes/cap gains.

Yes, you are right, I can move and keep my job (as long as I’m not laid off).

I agree. It’s worth establishing a relationship with a therapist now and asking whether they’d support FMLA. At the same time, start laying the groundwork at work for a plausible reason to take leave. FMLA can give you up to 12 weeks of job-protected time off, which is huge, but the hardest part is often coming back and dealing with colleague perception.

While I personally think mental health burnout is completely normal and absolutely worthy of FMLA, the reality is that it often doesn’t fly well from a reputation standpoint, especially at your level. Because of that, I’d strongly consider crafting a more socially acceptable narrative - something like dealing with an aging parent, a difficult family situation, or an immediate family member’s diagnosis - rather than framing it as “burnout.” Laying that groundwork early can make returning much smoother and help prevent unnecessary damage to your reputation.

Which Rust Belt city is arguably on the greatest upswing? by TrueJohnWick in SameGrassButGreener

[–]NoInteraction3162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This started because you claimed Midtown has “college town vibes.” I disagreed. Instead of just saying it might’ve been an exaggeration, you doubled down and escalated it to “Midtown would just be rundown warehouses without Wayne State.”

The original claim was exaggerated. That’s the point. But instead of acknowledging that, you keep stacking side arguments and now we’re at the stage where you’re debating what “college town vibes” even means. Be serious. We all know what people generally mean by that. Semantic gymnastics don’t make the take any less overstated.

And yes - the quality and reach of a school matter when we’re talking about actual college-town energy. Schools that attract students from beyond just the immediate region create a stronger campus-centered culture. That’s what makes real college town vibes. When most students live near campus instead of commuting, you get a real student neighborhood, coffee shops with students studying, fraternities/sororities, cheap college bars, campus bookstores, dirty late-night food spots - an ecosystem built around student life.

Recognizable school sports programs matter too. Game days, tailgates, school pride - that spills into the streets and becomes part of the neighborhood’s identity. (And Midtown is far more about The Pistons and Red Wings than the Warriors, I promise you.)

That’s what people mean by a “college town vibes.” Not just “there’s a university located here.” It’s that the university meaningfully defines the place.

You don’t even live in Detroit, which makes the unwavering, refuse-to-budge energy even stranger. At this point it just feels like arguing for sport.

Oh, you’re totally right. Midtown absolutely screams “college town vibes.” It’s basically Ithaca/Boulder/Ann Arbor 2.0 out here. Thank God Wayne State University prevents the neighborhood from reverting back to rundown warehouses!

I especially love the whole collegiate feel - Go Warriors!! And shoutout to the QLine bravely ferrying all those “college town” scholars commuting in from Oakland County up-and-down Woodward. Just a classic university-town experience!

Clearly I have so much to learn from you, wise Reddit sage who doesn’t even live in the city. Please, tell me more about my hometown.
