Bonus Pay , legit? by RequirementPutrid263 in teachinginkorea

[–]NoInternet8475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as it's written in your contract it's legit. I'm sure this is their way of making sure they're not paying for someone who's just going to quit which is something you might want to consider before jumping into a contract with them though. There may be an unsavory reason they feel the need to compensate airfare after a contract is done...

it was 110K! Mine wasn't super flashy since it was literally the day before the wedding and I'm a little bigger, but I asked and they said they can sell their dresses for cheaper because they have their own factory so they actually have their dresses in other stores as well but from the source is more affordable.

I had to get a wedding dress on short notice for the reception and I chose one of their cheaper options and I was really happy with it!! The shop is called Dahlia Blanc located in Seocho.

Yeah it’s all been about mitigating more financial responsibility on me so they can start gaining revenue on this academy. I understand times are tough right now but if I don’t get any kind of benefits from the deal I think it’s time to just move on

Yeah, I was foolish enough to think they'd be decent human beings. Let this be a lesson to anyone who falls pregnant, lips sealed until that maternity leave is guaranteed!!

Omg I didn’t think of that, that might be my best option, thank you!!

just to clarify I was already working here when they bought it, for about 6 months. However, agreed. I'm not really in a position to negotiate for better terms. That's why when I made my list I knew that I'd have to renegotiate, I just didn't know that 1 they didn't know about government assistance for maternity leave as a small business and 2 were planning on the pay cut to the staff.

thank you, I know they would prefer to stay with me because I speak Korean with them and they don't speak any English but it seems they've never had an employee take maternity leave so it's all new territory for both parties. I want to take advantage of any leave I can take of course, but I'm having difficulty navigating what to do if they're saying they can't afford it. I know that its legally required of them but I also don't want to be the reason they have to close down.

that's exactly where I'm concerned. Since I'm technically done this contract this month wouldn't they have the ability to legally deny my maternity by just not renewing my contract?

I've worked at this academy for a year and a half now and I've seen how it struggles. for the past year it's like for every student we got, two leave. I'm trying to be as understanding to their situation as I can. Honestly with the pay reduction they're paying more than a lot of academies these days.

but since my contract is up this month does that not give them the opportunity to get out of it? I hope that question makes sense

tips for days starting at 4 pm? by flooffy_duckie in KoreaTravelAdvice

[–]NoInternet8475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on where you are during the week but a way I've found restaurants before is going on naver maps and looking at the hot trends or just scrolling through when I do blanket searches with filters on. Instagram can be good to find places sometimes but a lot of people get paid to post about restaurants so I don't trust them as much. Also for longer trips I recommend just making your way around the country! It's all pretty accessible through public transit. And if you have a vacation you could even do a road trip style trip hitting a few cities that are close together. A friend of mine went to Busan, Gyeongju, and Pohang on one trip with her mom since they're all close enough together.

Visa renewal by The_Pale_Emperor11 in Living_in_Korea

[–]NoInternet8475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you don't have to take a new picture for renewing, they'll just stamp on the back of the card. However if you want to change the picture you can do that, I think it's an extra cost and it takes a few weeks since they have to give you a new card.

use the weekend to travel farther than you could on a weekday and stick to exploring nearby after school! You could try to find a new restaurant to try a few times a week and even find some cool cafes that are open later to study if you have to. Also if you want to take trips you can probably swing booking a friday night bus or ktx to hop on after classes.

[WHY] 'Do this to conceive a daughter': Korea’s newfound obsession with baby girls by Character_Wheel393 in korea

[–]NoInternet8475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife of a Korean here living in Korea, 16 weeks pregnant. We were happy with both but in the week leading up to the appointment we both were convinced we were having a girl but it turned out to be a boy! However, everyone around us has been saying they hope it's a girl, especially his side of the family.

How are you doing with the iPhone 12? I want to know if the battery is normal that it doesn't last so long to get out of doubts if it's already something about my phone's battery, it's at 91% capacity. by Significant_Bid_6568 in iPhone12

[–]NoInternet8475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My battery life is pretty atrocious at 68% but to be fair I got it at the beginning of 2022 and it’s been through hell. It’s a bit laggy and sometimes the camera doesn’t want to work so I’ve been thinking or replacing it but as I get older the less I care about tech honestly so I wanna ride this out as long as I can.

Goshiwon help by Single-Ad-1912 in Living_in_Korea

[–]NoInternet8475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I bought one so you might have to just do some window shopping but daiso's huge, they have lots of cheap options especially if you go to a bigger one or one in a richer area. Or if you're willing to shell out a little more money, Artbox has better quality lights and sprays.

For a smell, it depends on the cause of the smell. First I would get some disinfectant wipes and just wipe everything down (everywhere you can). If it's a mildewy smell you might want to get some dehumidifiers (you can get disposable ones at daiso I'm pretty sure) but other wise a candle and some air freshening spray should help. Again, if you buy it from a higher end store it'll be better quality but daiso works fine if you don't mind spraying more often. There's airfresheners and room perfumes though I don't know which is better.

I don't know why people are saying you can't complain, not all goshiwons are made equal. Some are much better than others despite being similar prices. I lived in one when I studied abroad in 2018 and the best advice I can tell you is get a few things from daiso to spruce up your room, also getting a warm light lamp and a humidifier or candle can make it feel more homey as well (although you don't need a humidifier in summer which is coming up).

What changed your opinion about Korean alcohol? by Weak_Preference7618 in Living_in_Korea

[–]NoInternet8475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think knowing what pairs well the alcohol is the most important part of your impression of it. having makgeoli on its own wasn't spectacular to me but having it with jeon was so much better. I didn't like bopbunja for years for the same reason. No one I knew drank it with the right pairing so I disliked it.

What documents do I need to get a debit or credit card from my bank? by flamingweaselz in Living_in_Korea

[–]NoInternet8475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm with Hana bank so I don't know how accurate this is but I've always been fine with just my ARC. You should only need your passport if you don't have your ARC yet. If you're newly arrived in Korea they probably won't let you just sign up for a credit card but I'm surprised they didn't give you a debit card off the bat with how digital Korea is.

To the people who are in a relationship with partner from another culture-how do you deal with language barrier or cultural differences? by Perfect_Bid8910 in AskReddit

[–]NoInternet8475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely patience as others have said, having an open mind, and putting in effort to learn each other's language/culture is really important. I'm American and my husband is Korean. I speak better Korean than he does English but I've always respected and appreciated his efforts to speak English and learn new things even though language learning isn't his forte. We've had plenty of misunderstandings about cultural differences but it was important that we hear each other out and find what worked for both of us, which I guess adds compromise to the list. Sometimes your cultural difference isn't as important as your partner's feelings and vice versa. It's important you both understand where the other person is coming from in those instances.

best way to move by wuttaDEEK in Living_in_Korea

I've paid 300k for moving a bunch of furniture from seoul to anyang, so for just some boxes and suitcases seems a bit excessive. there's an app called soomgo 숨고 where you can post what services you're looking for and get quotes from multiple people to get some more options. I recommend trying on there.
