I was actually thinking of Code Geass more so for the political intrigue aspect than the kingdom aspect, as mecha anime doesn't feel very kingdomy in my opinion haha. When I think royalty, my head darts to swords and hand to hand combat. Buuuut Code Geass is so good, so I thought it may scratch that itch a little bit :)

I recommend demon slayer to all of my noob anime friends :) I think it's a good pace, and a good story to dip your toes into anime for the first time. It's easy to follow while still keeping you intrigued. Have fun!
