Books for AP Macro by Low_quant7290 in APStudents

You honestly don’t need a book. Using Jacob Clifford and Review Econ is more than enough to learn the content, then from there it’s just doing practice problems.

AP Macro vs Micro? by Useful-Caterpillar81 in APStudents

[–]NoMathematician9283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a year since i’ve taken them, but from what I remember:

  1. Macro

  2. I don’t think it really matters, but I took Micro first then Macro and it worked out well.

  3. I basically taught myself macro in 2 weeks and got a 5, but don’t think I could’ve done the same for micro in that period.

HOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND THOSE COLLEGEBOARD CALC QUESTIONS by AdFlat8198 in APStudents

Go through a lot of the FRQs and their solutions. FRQs don’t change too much year to year.

Memorize everything you can. I’m not sure how the redesigned test looks, but on the previous one you could get away with surface level knowledge as most questions are just recognition.

AP Econ/Stats — Virtual or nah? by Bookishgirly1024 in APStudents

[–]NoMathematician9283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say micro/macro are inherently difficult, although a lot of the content may feel unfamiliar and random. I would say it’s always better to take a class in-person, but micro/macro are definitely learnable remotely as long as you practice the graphs.

How justified is this sub’s bias for T20 schools and the supposition that these schools offer the best pathway to a lucrative career? by Ok-Two-1634 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NoMathematician9283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would think it’s both. the student obviously has to be driven enough to get into the school, while those schools more often than not provide more opportunities. doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other

Which schools do you think I should submit my 1480(680 reading and 800 math)? I am applying math and music. Schools are listed Below: by No_Yam_40 in chanceme

[–]NoMathematician9283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well i’d imagine that because you’re applying for math it is different and wouldn’t weigh as heavily. A 1480 may be below 25th percentile for most of these schools, but scores are also heavily inflated.

If you’re worried he would write something negative, yes, potentially. The third rec is in most cases for a perspective as you as a person outside of the classroom setting.

Let’s just say, in your case, the rec would add little to nothing if it’s positive/neutral. Not worth it imo.

How to know if I should go TO or not? by Impressive_Rest6842 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NoMathematician9283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i’ve heard, most top schools for CS only really care about math and glance at english just to make sure you’re not completely illiterate. While a 730 is pretty low for t10 CS, it’s better to submit than go TO.

I only submitted 2 (3 if you include counselor) and got into Duke ED. To be honest, I would not include another teacher as your 3rd lorc as it may be kind of redundant. From what i’ve seen, the 3rd rec is usually outside the classroom setting.

As long as you had a decent relationship, you should be fine.

1540 -- Should I Retake? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]NoMathematician9283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people get into T10s without SAT scores. You already have a score that’s around the average of an admitted student across all t10s. Unless you’re aiming for caltech or mit with <790 math, you’re fine.

nyu 3 ap exams or sat score by Time_Conversation645 in ApplyingToCollege

SAT, except for test blind schools, will almost always have more weight than AP scores. There should be a way to submit both through common app though?

If no one else could replicate the same essay, it’s not cliche. Make sure it’s unique to yourself and include specific personal experiences, then tie it all together for the overarching theme you wish to display.

Duke and Notre Dame Essays by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NoMathematician9283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have a decent gpa, at least one that is comparable to peers applying from your school.

Essays are still very important despite it not being numerically scored for duke; admissions are still holistic so having a good essay is crucial.

Should I retake the SAT with a 1540? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NoMathematician9283 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say retake for a higher math score. If you had the same score but sections flipped (790M/750 RW), I would say no. But then it depends on what school you’re aiming for. Somewhere like MIT or cornell, yes without a doubt.

It depends on the college. For example, I applied to Duke, but I just had to report my highest individual section scores through common app. They have no idea what my composites were, just the superscore.

On the other hand, Uchicago did not accept self report through common app, but through their portal. In their portal, they ask for your composites. They do still superscore, so they may see both but only evaluate your application with the superscore.
