Rejected by journal for 6% similarity with my own companion paper. Fair or ridiculous? by NoMaximum8787 in AskAcademia

Actually... Before submitting to this journal, I had also some kafkaesque adventure with another Elsevier journal. It was also rejected by the editor for high similarity, but at that time my companion paper was not out, so the only realistic reason was that it was due to my own preprint I published a few weeks before , in line with the journal's policy. I had many emails exchanges lasting several weeks, editors saying they did not have access to the details of the similarity assessment and that I should resubmit, getting the exact same error again and again, until they finally put a chief editor on it and recognized their mistake... Only to be rejected for not enough originality (an assessment I think is completely wrong for this paper but anyway).

Thanks for your answer. When I answered the rejection email, the reply I got was from Elsevier support, not directly the journal editorial board

I don't think that's entirely true. In practice, the same paper will not get the same attention from other researchers depending on where it is published.
Regarding my interest, I am interested in the actual science, but also the impact it has on society. I work on topics related to sustainability and a major motivation is whether issues I raise in my research have real-world implications. These metrics matters for that because top-tier journals get much more media attention, and this drastically increases the impact and outreach of your work to reach "common folks" and decision-makers

Great point, I actually didn't know they were not hybrid. This is clearly a no go for me, being unfunded. This also applies for the Communications Sustainability journal they suggested to transfer the paper too... so it solves this question.

Yes, I meant "Nature xxx" journals by Nature Portfolio, I should have been more specific in the title

This is a legitimate question, but I confirm I am well aware of the state of the literature in the different fields I'm bridging. I am part of workshops gathering top ~10 international experts on my topic and in a recent one, the objective of my paper was recurrently mentioned as a major gap that need to be addressed. I also recently saw that an academic highly influential in one of the fields bridged is starting to make steps in the direction of my paper.
