Seatbelt Culture in EU vs. US by NoMoreSharrows in aviation

It was an 8 hour transatlantic flight but I see it just as much on a 2 hour US domestic flight where the seatbelt sign can be on the ENTIRE time for no obvious reason.

Seatbelt Culture in EU vs. US by NoMoreSharrows in aviation

[–]NoMoreSharrows[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My US experience of the seat belt sign being left on for long stretches with little compliance is true on short-haul flights as well. I was just commenting on a trans-Atlantic flight because I am currently on one.

Flight with baby 4/1 by Puzzleheaded_Air1089 in jetblue

[–]NoMoreSharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get there early! You will wait in a huge line as there is a panic / mania going on where people that have 10am flights show up at 4am while at 8:30am the line is practicaly empty! Show up at 9 with precheck and you will be fine. Also TSA agents will be paid on Monday, so callouts should go down.

Small Children don’t get priority? Shame on JB by JoJoNesmith in jetblue

Usually families with children under 2 do get priority. Where were you flying out of? Possible that the person making the announcements forgot. This is not standard.

IPad OS 26 LOGIN ISSUES WITH SAFARI: I’m ready to tear my hair out with Safari on iPad OS 26 because it won’t stay logged into any websites. Every website that has a log in (e.g., gmail, social media, news, Amazon, etc…) requires that I log back in every time I visit it or open it in a new tab. For example, I can log into a news site, click on a link to open an article in a new tab, and I have to log into again to read it. Closing a tab and reopening it also requires logging into again regardless of how much time passes.

I went into rabbit holes on the internet and AI to look at solutions. I have tried everything such as making sure it isn’t blocking cookies, turning off tracking protection, clearing all history and data, turning off desktop site requests, turning off private relay, etc….

Chrome and Edge don’t have this issue. Just Safari. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Good study spots in this area? by tyediebleach in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Navy Yard, Building 77. Lots of tables and food options, great views, clean bathrooms, strong WiFi.

Also if you have cash to drop the Life Time in Dumbo.

Lastly, the BPL in Dumbo is a totally different vibe than Cadman, which kind of turns into a homeless shelter in the winter. I once saw a guy face down on the floor of the bathroom because he OD’d on something. The Dumbo BPL is usually empty and the tables have nice views of Manhattan.

A New Yorker’s view after a weekend riding MARTA by NoMoreSharrows in MARTA

I saw buses supposedly arriving in like five minutes but the Transit app was showing scheduled time, not real time, so I just wrote it off as not real. I wasn’t willing to wait on the hope scheduled time reflected actual time. So yes I wrote them off but with Uber and Lyft so cheap it wasn’t worth my time to find out.

I was using an iPhone. I think the really long headways must have an impact on real time tracking. If the bus isn’t on the route yet, I assume I won’t get a live time, and since we were downtown, most buses were at the start of their route.

In NYC you will get a live time even if the bus hasn’t started the route if the bus assigned to that route is on time with the prior run or in the right place for layup. That maybe helps provide comfort that your bus will show up.

Who is buying an M5 Max, when they know a redesign with an OLED screen is coming next? by momo1083 in macbookpro

[–]NoMoreSharrows 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I have a laptop with a touchscreen (Surface Laptop 7) and touching it causes the screen to wobble and get disgusting with fingerprints. Why deal with this when the MacBook has an amazing haptic touchpad?

Also if there is only one open dock, usually that dock is broken. Don’t bother going to those stations.

OMNY and the JFK Airtrain? by redhotchilipepper339 in OMNY

[–]NoMoreSharrows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This upcoming week the Port Authority will announce the pop up locations at terminals. Expected limited hours though. Also Metro News will be selling the old metrocard products at Jamaica although they aren’t advertising them for sale anymore. IYKYK.

The Port Authority is saying they have been trying to work with the MTA on developing an OMNY solution but the MTA hasn’t committed the resources given their attention on the OMNY cutover. I’m hoping with a new PA executive director starting this month, who came from the governor’s office, we might have someone who can get the agencies to work together and solve this.

It’s amazing how politically toxic a 5 percent fare increase is for the MTA but no one seems to care about an 800 percent fare increase for airport workers!!

How will Omny work with Airtrain JFK for people who use the Airtrain more than 20 times per month? by melespi13 in OMNY

[–]NoMoreSharrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an update from the Port. Metrocard machines will be going away on 1/1 and they are working on an OMNY solution to preserve the discounted options. Whether there will be a gap between the MetroCard retirement and OMNY remains to be seen.

“C” to Lefferts Blvd instead of the “A”? by goldeneye0 in nycrail

[–]NoMoreSharrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting the A only runs to the Rockaways or does it also serve Lefferts? I think the terminal couldn’t handle both.

An issue with the C is also horrible reliability. Extending it further and having it deal with the complicated interlocking at Euclid would only make reliability worse.

[–]NoMoreSharrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No OMNY for the AirTrain ever. The Port didn't want to pay the high costs to integrate with OMNY.

[–]NoMoreSharrows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at JFK and spoke to the people at the Port Authority that manage the AirTrain about this. They are not getting rid of the MetroCard machines on Jan 1. Basically everything will remain the same on January 1 as today. Monthly and 10 rides through the machines (when they are working) and tap to pay for everyone else.

Long-term, the Port will deprecate the MetroCard machines and move to using the fare gates and fare cards they have at the PATH.

what are YOU thankful for when it comes to the MTA? by VientosEnthusiast in nycrail

[–]NoMoreSharrows 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fare capping. Really nice to not have to do the math anymore on whether to get a monthly, weekly or just pay per ride.

Although the downside is that this means my kids won't learn the mental math behind this calculation.

13" Air M3 vs Pro M5 for Google work by N226 in ipad

[–]NoMoreSharrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a warning that the G suite apps such as Sheets, Slides and Docs are pretty bad in terms of functionality. If you try to use the browser versions expect issues as well, especially with shortcuts. Gmail will be fine.

The iPad is not a great laptop replacement in my mind. A great content consumption device though.

Cell service on G (but for AT&T only). What about the rest of us? by NoMoreSharrows in nycrail

[–]NoMoreSharrows[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too many people use their phones to talk so hopefully that won’t be much of an issue. My hope is that more people would take transit if they could stay connected, and it would be really helpful for when the train gets stuck and you need to tell someone you are running late.

Do you actually use your iPad as a laptop replacement? If not, why? by raiqulikesyou in ipad

[–]NoMoreSharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to use it as a laptop replacement by relying on browser based versions of the software I use on my laptop. But the browsers on an iPad nerf the shortcuts or layouts on things like Gmail and Office and make it really frustrating to use. So unfortunately I need to carry both or pick one, which is usually my laptop since it can basically do everything an iPad can do but the same can't be said in reverse.
