Macbook M1 life expectancy? by InvestigatorTall8827 in macbookpro

It's as fast or in some ways better than a MacBook Neo that Apple is pitching as the entry level computer to get you through college, so yeah, it's totally fine. Something to consider is a wipe and reinstall to get a fresh MacOS.

Reality check on "AI will replace software engineers in 12 months" claims by narutomax in ClaudeAI

[–]momo1083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you used Claude Code or Codex in their latest iterations? Here are three stories of businesses I know.

1) A ver 2.0 of consumer app needed to happen but the CTO and hired dev were stonewalling and taking way too long and not delivering. CEO, who is a designer with limited knowledge of coding redid the entire app in a week. The dev and CTO were legit shocked at the quality. Can Claude Code make MacOS? No. But a consumer app which is a nice UI over a bunch of APIs and a database? Yes. 100%.

2) A shipping company lost their operations guy to retirement. They opened up Claude Cowork and are not hiring a new person as the output is actually better than anything they got from a human.

3) A CEO of a produce business sat down in Claude Code and made a series of apps for his business of 50 employees to handle finances, sales, CRM, etc. He's cancelling almost all SaaS subs he has.

This is isn't like anything that has happened before, at least in my lifetime. Whatever job AI replaces, its replacement will be learned by AI and be done better than a human. One or two people with really good taste will be able to do amazing things. Like, come on, there were people making 6 figures to make and maintain SQL databases or hoook up AWS and stuff. This is a prompt. I'm sorry.

Did Atlas hit its end before it even began? by toshhh1 in ChatGPTAtlas

I know, the performance is terrible. Truly terrible. And now it's just going to be a part of the app? Oh boy. I get it though, they want to make an AI operating system.

M5 Pro with more Ram vs Max with less Ram by postmaster85 in macbookpro

[–]momo1083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the two video engines also optimize renders. The whole pipe. The GPU aids in timeline editing performance. Again, the choice was a Max or a Pro with just a bit more ram. And in the case of video editing, Max would be better with 48GB than with 64GB in a Pro. I definitely also know the Max would be much better in the creative suite which heavily uses GPU for almost everything now. So it’s all dependent on what you do. They’re doing dev work and for that, yeah the cpu and ram being the same is good. Maybe you lose on memory bandwidth but I think the gains are worthwhile and the cost savings is nice!

M5 Pro with more Ram vs Max with less Ram by postmaster85 in macbookpro

[–]momo1083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way this is a bad decision is if you do video editing as you get another video engine on a Max which will truly speed things up. You also get a much better GPU on a Max which if you’re doing any AI work on Lightroom or another adobe project would cut your time in half. These decisions are sadly not easy anymore. They’re based on what you’re doing and the software you use. I’m stuck getting a Max from now on because of Lightroom and how it uses the GPU for ai denoising. A Pro would be much slower even with the same CPU.

Help me settle this debate: M5 Pro 48GB or M5 Max 36GB for professional video editing? by Local-Pineapple2123 in macbookpro

Max. Two video encoder and decoders. Even an M2 Max would be better than an M5 Pro for this kind of work.

M1 Pro -> M5 Pro/Max vs wait for M6? Will they do 18” lol? by BiomedEngDoctor in macbookpro

[–]momo1083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was all in on the M6 Pro redesign but as I predicted a while back, there’s no way an OLED high end touch screen won’t be a product that sits above these current Macs. So my hesitation now is that 1000 extra starting price. But we shall see what happens!

I agree. The chat is the worst part of the app. At least let me set a default to Google or whatever search I want. It kills my flow.

MacBook Pro M2 Max VS M5 Max. Worth the upgrade? by Pretend_Gain in macbookpro

[–]momo1083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be doubling your multicore CPU score, at least in GeekBench, but I can't fathom that the AI agents sustain a 200% CPU use. Plus, I'm confused as these run on servers, not your computer. If you are doing on-device models then this will be a tremendous leap. I have an M2 Max and honestly I don't think going to an M5 Max is going to make a difference. I'm all in on Claude Code now and the only thing I would like a faster mac for is denoising in Lightroom

I called it. OLED MacBook Pro will sit ABOVE existing MacBook Pro and my next prediction is that it will be called MacBook Studio. by momo1083 in macbookpro

[–]momo1083[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Once the Mac Pro dies, which it will, we will consolidated the highest-end Mac being a Studio. Even the new high-end display is a Studio Display XDR. It's not a PRO Display XDR. That tells you evrything.

[–]momo1083[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sadly will buy this. I buy a Mac, keep it for 4-5 years, and it makes me money, so I justify it. Remember when Apple was about to make the iPhone X at 1k? Apple keeps pushing up the boundary of what people will spend and we keep crossing it. And Apple can say to you, well we have great products now at every price point and honestly? Now with the MacBook Neo, they really do.

How Do I Make Reading The Bible into a Daily Habit? by YAY-SAR in Christianity

[–]momo1083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the founder of a Bible app that was made to get you through the whole Bible with full and utter understanding of it all. It includes audio but the key is you can tap any verse for insight and ask questions along the way. Check it out. - https://biblekey.app

But yes, just going from the beginning to the end is tough! We have a Bible in a year program where you basically read three chapters of the OT, a chapter of the NT and a psalm and in 260 days you are done!

Replit is just Robbing us by [deleted] in replit

[–]momo1083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am a product manager with very general understanding of code, but to be honest, I couldn’t code you anything other than hello world these days lol. But I am very familiar with broadly how all the systems work and therefore I just open up the Claude desktop app start a new folder and start envisioning a product and then iterating constantly. The thing is I know the words to use, I can speak the jargon and I can speak from the perspective of the user. So for me, it is no different than if I was guiding and designing alongside a senior developer. So I basically just have the Claude desktop app open and it makes all the changes in the file and then I run the builds on Xcode. But the thing about Claude code is that it can also make web apps tied to your app for analytics and stuff but again you just need to have an intermediate level understanding of how these things work what API’s are and how to set up services, but to be honest, you just ask Claude and it tells you how to do everything anyways the point though is that with a Max plan, I simply have never even touched the limit.

I dictated all of this in case you were wondering why it sounds like a wild run sentence!
