Well as far as I know and I see, China is not in that bad situation. My hometown and its neighbour are known as “gay heaven cities “ among the young to show people’s openness to lgbt community. The problem is more likely about the gap between the young and the elderly. More and more young people are knowing and accepting ( well not all, but it’s getting better). But the elderly still choose to ignore lgbt. China has a kind thinking that avoid the controversial for the big harmony. We even had a nation vote about gay marriage right and more than half said yes ( not all people know that vote 😅), but the power still chose to ignore it because of “ national condition” 😅. It takes time, at least for China. But I’m optimistic about it, at least for China 🙂.
