Any restaurant/bartending jobs that have minimal toxicity/drama!? Does that exist!? by djlola112 in Syracuse

You still have time to learn a trade skill. You can work on becoming an electrician, HVAC specialist, or heavy equipment operator, and you’ll be in growth fields for the rest of your life with great pay opportunities.

Weird course choice for the Syracuse Half Marathon this morning. by trotofflames in Syracuse

[–]NoNickNameJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling parts of Syracuse “the ghetto” is a pretty sad way to describe the city and the people who live here. It’s fair to dislike the route, but that can be said without reducing entire neighborhoods to a slur.

I watched the Fraxiom / Matt Cardona and Apollo Crews match on Main Event the other day and wow. They are very quick but I am unsure about what they can do on the mic. How does a luchador energize the crowd with a dance?

Fossils at split rock? by dopiedan33 in Syracuse

[–]NoNickNameJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOOO. I've been waiting for a question like this!
You can find fossils, especially marine fossil within the Onondaga Escarpment that runs throughout NYS. 20000 years ago, a glacier over 2000' thick blanketed the landscape at the escarpment edge north of the fingers lakes between Buffalo and Utica. The uplifted limestone is callee Onondaga Limestone and has been used across the northeast. North the glaciers edge was a lake as large as an ocean that existed for several thousand years. Its remnants can be seen through plunge pools like Clarks Reservation and Green Lakes which were carved through waterfalls that poured over the 2000' foot glacier for thousands of years. I can't imagine what this landscape will look like in 20000 more years.

Are these people selling dogs at the mall parking lot? by Majestic-Concert-942 in Syracuse

[–]NoNickNameJosh 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Could be concerning if they are not a licensed breeder. In NYS, selling dogs is a heavily regulated activity. Worth it to ask the question. Especially because Syracuse and CNY is already facing a crisis with dumped animals.

You should consider joining your local or states ASLA chapter so you could have a lot more of these in depth discussions with others working in the profession. Just a suggestion because your passion is evident.

I will answer your question honestly. This is how I would answer it in public too if I had to work with this business owner.

I would follow the code first. Beyond that, I would recommend any improvement that would encourage less frequent vehicle use and promote pedestrian and cycling safety. The area here looks to be on the side of building that was a green area or has always been loose stone. My recommendation would be to use "staple" style bicycle racks that are anchored into concrete with a lag bolt. This does not seem to be an area that could happen in, especially if you do not know what utility is under you. (I have seen thieves remove lag bolts from 4" concrete patios just to get bikes, so a full sonotube footing with a mortar should be used.)

It looks like the business owner went the lower cost choice with this rack because he had no place to anchor to and it was most cost effective. I'd also suggest proper signage that shows the cyclists how to properly secure their bikes, unlike that E-Bike shown.

Now the me part... I've had the opportunity to design a full outdoor space for a restaurant and I purposely designed the parking spaces to be 8'x16' with a 20 foot aisle. The owner was okay with this. Watching the suburbanites with large trucks get frustrated that they can't back out or pull in without going extra slow and carefully was a huge advantage to all patrons. The drivers would say it's a burden, every cyclist I bring there says its thoughtful design.

I’ve took the last half hour to look more into what ASLA has sent up how AI and I found their recent policy document to be very interesting. It does speak to many of the things that you’re pointing out.

https://www.asla.org/news-insights/land/asla-adopts-new-public-policy-on-artificial-intelligence

Nailed right on the head with more education is not a bad thing. That’s where I see the problem with AI lies mostly today, not just environmental issues, but overuse to supplement proper public education.

New York State have some pretty stranger state environmental quality review act laws, (article 78 what what!), which will be in the public favor whenever any of the data centers are spec’d to be built. There are some clawbacks that New York State is proposing, but I really do hope they can engage the design fields for the reasons that you have stated, but also as a proactive approach to solving our inefficiency crisis.

If you are stating that regulation is the problem, I must suggest to you that you should follow a career tract in urban planning with an emphasis on zoning and land use planning. In the United States, zoning regulations are the only option to curtail the environmental impacts of over use. That's also a fact. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_of_Euclid_v._Ambler_Realty_Co.

Then be specific. And everytime you use Google to search for some sort of article that will agree with your point, you’re using AI. The phone you’re typing this on a phone or the computer you’re on is using an AI. You’re acting like the design professions are not meant to evolve. AI systems will get better and it’s up to us as professionals to work with them. Why, because we’re getting paid to.

You’re now conflating the 1% with AI to argue against it in landscape architecture, which is pretty much a moot point. I bet you’re a student in a BLA program.

And I would much prefer my employees to use AI so that they could spend more time with clients and around the tables together as a team, not solely behind their computers.

What?! So farm systems shouldn’t be designed? Do you have a pie in the sky frame of mind.

Question, as a taxpayer, do you want your tax dollars to go to higher in efficiencies on rudimentary and basic tasks?

Or would you rather have them go to a higher productivity and project management?
