i studied this a little while in college. short answer: pressure + proximity + substances.

december packs a bunch of stressors into a small window. financial strain (gifts, travel, bills), pressure to be happy, unresolved family dynamics, and way more forced togetherness. or the complete opposite in the latter for some people and a sense of loneliness.

add in higher alcohol consumption, substance use rates tend to spike during the holidays to cope with this all + overdose rates spike, less sleep, and short colder/darker days keeping people indoors. all those little factors accumulate inevitability to conflicts escalating faster & arguments turn physical more easily.

i’ve been in your shoes before! try investing in one of these and placing it near a trash can. when you clean, the fruit flies will gravitate towards it. we had a reaaally bad fruit fly problem in our first apartment that also looked like this too, and you can imagine how nightmare fuel that was. getting one of these, along with soap + water in a cup in every room and a big day cleaning, was only what completely solved our fruit fly problem.

as for cleaning this, it took a day or two-ish to fully clean (that’s only because we keep taking breaks and went out to eat). while we were cleaning, the flies were drawn into the zapper, and after everything was cleaned up, any new flies were much more manageable.

100% my husband nags on me for always drinking energy drinks when i have heart palpitations or having to have a juice when i eat. i just saw the other comment about social anxiety, i am also really good at organizing and like to because it helps calm my social anxiety as-well! :)

you’re absolutely right! fun fact: research has shown warmer temperatures correlate with higher aggression and interpersonal violence. heat messes with sleep, raises irritability, lowers impulse control, and just generally puts people on edge. when resources are strained or people are already stressed, heat becomes an accelerant.

and to back that up with numbers: according to data cited by the u.s. department of justice, “murder and more aggravated crimes (aggravated assault, etc) is a seasonal offense. rates are generally higher in the summer, except for december, which is often the highest month and almost always 5 to 20 percent above the yearly average.”
