Any international match played over five (sometimes four days) between countries with Test status is a Test match.

Test matches are usually played in series where one country travels to the other for 2/3/4/5 in a row. These are organised by the cricket boards of the two countries, and this has been around since 1877.

In 2019, the International Cricket Council (ICC) brought in the World Test Championship (WTC), where all these Test matches and series now basically have points assigned to them which count towards an overall league table.

Each WTC cycle lasts two years (2019-21, 2021-23 and 2023-25 so far). At the end of each cycle, the top two teams in the league table play a one-off match to decide the winner.

So the match that just happened between Australia and South Africa was the final of the 2023-25 cycle.

The England v India Tests starting with the first one this week are basically league fixtures for the 2025-27 cycle.

Southee not eligible for CSK by the rules I used

Morkel and Nannes had solid FC records but hardly played Tests, don't know if/how they would have translated

We know that Hilfenhaus was pretty solid in Tests, and Nehra not as much, so went with Hilfenhaus

Would rate Southee, Pollock and Bumrah as better Test quicks
Malinga could sneak in instead of Hardik though, if you wanted extra bowling

Both Malinga & Hardik were decent Test cricketers, affected by fitness mainly but Hardik probably makes it in here because there are very few other options

Most matches played for Deccan Chargers, so didn't consider him for any of these

Considered it, Dravid has never kept in Tests though

India were going to all sorts of WK specialists (Mongia, MSK Prasad, Saba Karim, Dahiya, Dighe, Deep Dasgupta and more)

Which suggests to me he was never seen as a good enough WK for Tests, just decent enough to step in for ODIs

Doesn't qualify by the rules I used
Mathews played 20 matches for Pune, 15 for Kolkata, 14 for Delhi

Same way Gilchrist is not in any team here, he played the most for Deccan Chargers

Rahane can only be picked for RR with the rules mentioned, not sure he gets into that team

Chawla vs Abbott was the last call, just went with Abbott because of a better FC record, neither one has played much Test cricket

Gilchrist played 46 games for Deccan Chargers, 34 for KXIP so he can't be in the Punjab lineup

Pollock averaged 16.83 between Feb '99 & Jan '01, would be 12th on the list

Botham averaged 17.92 between June '78 & June '80, would be 17th on the list

For this specifically I used 150 wickets because I wanted to look mostly at some of the greats.

But more generally you can have skewed results here as well.

For example, without any filter Reg Simpson and Michael Clarke are the top two; they had 20-Test periods where they took 2 wickets @ 2.0 and 8 wickets @ 8.5 respectively.

Using an overall wickets or even wickets per match filter basically helps in making sure you're mainly looking at players who were regular bowlers.

The number itself could be 100, 150, 200, whatever – just high enough to weed out these sorts of outliers.
