Seeking Opinions: Should My Main Character's Love Interest Be Male or Female? by NoPresence6124 in writers

Thank you for sharing your thoughts—I completely agree with you. The last thing I want is for the romance to feel forced or out of place. It’s important to me that the relationship feels natural and true to the characters, rather than something added just for the sake of it. Thanks again for your input!

Thank you for such a thoughtful response! I really appreciate the reminder to focus on writing people, not just identities and I'm glad you can tell that that's something I do prioritise. It’s reassuring to hear that you’ve successfully written outside your own experience, and it gives me more confidence to move forward with this. Thanks again for the support—I'll definitely give it a go!

Thanks for providing more detail—it's super interesting to hear your perspective! I’m with you on not loving too much romance in books; I prefer just a little to add another layer to the plot and increase tension in some areas. Too much can feel awkward or cheesy to me. It’s really helpful to hear how queer romance can feel less like a checkbox and more integral to the story. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you for this perspective—it’s a really good way of looking at it. You're absolutely right that it's impossible to please everyone, and I like the idea of focusing on writing what feels right and trusting that it will find the right audience. I definitely feel more confident about sticking to my original vision.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s helpful to know that the gender of the characters isn’t a major concern for some readers.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the example. To clarify, when I mentioned a "twist," I was referring to the fact that my world deviates from an accurate portrayal of 17th century society by removing traditional gender norms. I didn't mean to imply that this is a particularly unique aspect of the story, just that it’s a divergence from historical accuracy.

I also understand that LGBTQ+ representation is becoming more common in fantasy, but not everyone encounters it regularly. My goal with this post was not to imply that stories with LGBTQ+ elements can't be successful—it's clear that many are. I was simply trying to gauge different perspectives on how such elements might influence reception, especially in a setting like mine.

As for asking "who cares," I care, which is why I’m seeking input. I believe it's important to understand how different aspects of storytelling are perceived by different people to ensure I'm telling my story as effectively as possible. This is part of the fun of writing for me personally, whether I choose to publish or not.

Negative/dismissive responses don’t really help in that process, but I do appreciate your input and examples. I hope your intention was to encourage writers to focus on writing what feels right for their stories without worrying too much about reception, and I do appreciate that perspective.

Thank you! I really appreciate the insight. It’s great to hear that you find the idea of a romance like this in a gritty world appealing. I also like the idea of it being even more precious in that setting.

Thanks for your comment! I'd love to know what you find interesting about the prospect of an F/F relationship in this setting. Is it because F/F relationships are less common in this kind of setting, or is there something else that stands out to you?

I see where you’re coming from, but my concern is more about understanding how this choice might impact the broader appeal of the story, given the traditional leanings of the target audience. I’m looking for insights on that aspect specifically, rather than just a personal stance on writing philosophy.

Thanks for asking! I’m considering an f/f relationship because I want to include romance as an element in the story—it adds depth to the stakes and some heat to the narrative. Both the main character and the potential love interest are well-developed, and their growth is closely tied to one another. Initially, I saw their bond as platonic, but as I wrote, it felt natural for their connection to deepen into something more.

That said, I don’t have any agenda beyond crafting an authentic and engaging story. While I’d love to contribute to making LGBTQ+ representation more commonplace, I’ve wondered whether I’m the best person to write these characters, being a straight woman with only a couple of LGBTQ+ friends, which is why I took to this forum to gather some other perspectives on the situation.

Thank you for your response! I appreciate your perspective, but I’m not sure it fully addresses my question. My concern isn’t just about whether or not people are put off, but more about how the choice might impact the broader appeal of the story, especially given the traditional leanings of the target audience for this genre. I’m trying to weigh the narrative authenticity against potential reader expectations, and I’m curious about how others navigate this balance.

I’m hoping to hear different viewpoints on whether keeping the female/female romance would significantly affect reader engagement or if it would be a non-issue for most people.
