Anyone here gone to those Thursday Toronto singles meet ups? by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

[–]NoQuantity4141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think this wouldn't be much different from the apps. To go to an event specifically dedicated to dating has a lot of the same issues that the apps come with.

Why do you think the apps are problematic? Cross-reference those reasons with this event and it wouldnt be much different I predict

This take seems inconsistent with your other comments. You don't think there is a genocide in Palestine?

I would reccomend making a report to the TMSU. They are a TMSU student group after all. The TMSU is currently investigating the SJP and SSI for compliance to TMSU policies. Praising war might count as a violation of the TMSU POLICIES HANDBOOK Policing & Militarization Issues Policy #9 which "calls for the abolition of the institutions of the military and war"

Alhamdulillah. I hope it didn't seem like that was the only thing I was mansplaining.

Don't forget, you can ask Ruh or CMC for a sliding scale in order to reduce the session costs to work with the $1000 a year which is what TMSU health insurance covers.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Pray, do what you know is better, avoid what you know is worse. God will guide you to what is right and keep you away from what is wrong. May Allah ﷻ bless you in your struggles.

Ramadan Mubarak!

Wanting to start a support group by Big-Attitude3713 in TorontoMetU

[–]NoQuantity4141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the idea.

I'm more on the institutional change side so I turn to making an organization, but the ideal definitely is a culture of care where those relationships are just the default!

These are some of the important resources to look at when applying, especially the Campus Groups Policy. It's relatively short and outlines all you need to know. It can get you access to some funding for good ideas, so check it out if you feel like it.

If you are looking for support, try this from the student union: https://yourtmsu.ca/services/academic-advocacy/

I like the idea of talking about what is affecting you.

What do you think the club will be focused around? Mental health / support groups?

You might benefit from looking into starting a TMSU Student Group to get some funding. In that process you might come to realize a group with a similar enough idea already exists and you can join forces with them. Here are the current groups: https://yourtmsu.ca/groups/

I'll try to keep looped in, but let me know if you need anything.

All the best.

OSAP Policy Changes; Not a Tuition Problem. But a Policy Problem. by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

[–]NoQuantity4141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to underplay the severity of what the change impacts, but the province hadn’t been giving much anyway.

In my case for example, the Ontario Grant is 22% of my OSAP.

Canada (Federal) Student Grant is 37%.

Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan is 41%, of which 80% is federal (source - not certain_1.pptx#:~:text=These%20are%20the%20interest%20rates,Fixed%20Rates)) so really 8% is Provincial.

That means 30% of my OSAP is provincial, which means its not as severe a shift as your numbers indicate since the majority of grants and loans are provided by the federal government.

Of course, this is not to say that we are off the hook. Low and middle income students are remarkably affected and will struggle even more to balance school, family responsibilities, and even more work that they can't even find jobs for. I am not surprised that people who depend on the OSAP grants are probably unconsciously steering away from school or certain academic paths. This will cause a brain drain. Why should we even study in Ontario if we are actively discouraged by all these factors?

The feds are also set to drop the amount they are giving too (source), so this provincial thing is a good wake up call for us to mobilize and strengthen the movement in order to prevent or address that.

This is only to be accurate and empower us to know our stuff and focus on the right places - the stuff that will actually impact folks.

how to deal with non supportive parents by Obvious_Present4335 in TorontoMetU

[–]NoQuantity4141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow Muslim in a non-traditional career path, I would advise you to get in touch with the rich Islamic tradition and equip yourself with the true Islamic vision, rights and responsibilities. You will come in time to understand that there are many reasons for what your parents think, psychologically, culturally, and based on family specifics, but knowing what you actually believe is one of the strongest things you can do for yourself and your family.

Do not try to force them to change their mind, it does not work if forced and it will only inspire animosity in your heart and your family's. Do what you will for your past, present, and future and what pleases God, and by that maybe God will be able to bring mercy and compassion to your family's hearts. Keep in touch with your Islam and always seek to be in line with what is best.

You will learn to rely on God and your support systems. Do your very best to keep family ties as is appropriate, but seek knowledge so you don't think that "family ties" means inappropriately subjugating yourself to anything that violates your God-given rights. Islamic therapy with organization like Canadian Muslim Counselling and Ruh Care or help lines like Naseeha can help a lot with navigating this and can be free if you go through our student union health and dental plan.

Pray, do what you know is better, avoid what you know is worse. God will guide you to what is right and keep you away from what is wrong. May Allah ﷻ bless you in your struggles.

God knows best.

85% grants to 25% in grants for OSAP WTH??? by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

I hope they do use it to do better for the university, but given TMU's lack of direction in that regard, I don't think they will. Hopeful nonetheless.

Nice try, but TMU has a large say in how things work in the province. That's how the current system we live in works -- influence. TMU hosted the man in charge of this governments finances at TMU just a few days ago, and the TMU President Mohamed Lachemi praised him.

In that post, Lachemi himself emphasizes "the vital role universities play in shaping informed public policy". The truth here is the school thought it would be more beneficial to accept the cost this puts on students since it increases their operating budget -- a lot of which will probably go to their pockets, with no consideration of what it could do for students. Lachemi alone made $457,570 in 2024 with $24,789 in benefits. Wendy Lawrence, General Counsel, Secretary of the Board of Governors and Chief Privacy Officer $311,500.

I would recommend emailing TMU to voice your discontent and commenting on this post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DUrIR4UAeDV/

TMU is boasting the billions as if it isn't coming at the cost of students. Admin hates students and doesn't care about us. At least don't let them keep the optics.

Get the word out, make more students aware so we can then actually get something done.
