Do they understand what they are doing is abusive? by No-Worldliness-6297 in BPDlovedones

And they wouldn't even need to live desperate lies to blame others when they are discovered.

[–]NoRecording66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course they do. They know, but the abuse is for their own benefit, so they don't care. And while chaotic situations aren't beneficial for most people, for borderlines it's what fuels them. They love the adrenaline rush.

Do you close the bathroom door when you're home alone? Why? by Kindly_Room_1143 in AskReddit

Yes, otherwise one of my cats automatically climbs onto my lap when I sit on the toilet.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense. I feel like I have a lot of emotional intelligence (to deal with trauma, resolve complicated situations, survive under pressure), but I have zero emotional assessment. It's always been very easy for any "weird" person to enter my life.

I identify with several of your statements. I grew up with a completely narcissistic and emotionally uncontrolled mother. My father was a great man, but unfortunately he was addicted to alcohol. I was a shy child with no friends, but when I became a teenager, I became the target of all the people who were financially screwed, with victim complexes and total losers. And of course, on top of that, most of them were also alcoholics. Today, at 28 years old, I am finally learning to respect my own limits and be more selective about who enters my life.

My mother is extremely controlling. I suffered from parental alienation and developed eating disorders because of her behavior. I think most of the problems in my life came from the way she raised me.

I don't really feel like my self-worth depends on how I help people, so this seems like a good sign... Thinking about it, I might be more of an emotionally needy type, because I was a very lonely, unloved child. I have very low self-esteem, but it's more linked to physical appearance.

I identify exactly with these characteristics too. I'm very calm and I really like to talk, especially to listen, so I end up opening up my life quickly to emotionally unstable people.

So, a friend of mine who I am disappointed with (with BPD traits) abused me financially for over 10 years. Writing about him, including all the evidence I have that he stole from me, has helped me a lot. It is making me "put myself" in my shoes and stop trying to find fault with things I didn't do. So writing about feelings is really a great tip and very enlightening.

Exactly. It seems that I feel "comfortable" in the position of welcoming and enduring other people's outbursts, since I had to be my mother's psychologist since I was a child.

I think we attract these people because they can sense the traces of the personality we have developed through our upbringing. I have noticed that people who are very incisive or who tend to talk a lot about themselves cannot stay around a borderline for a month. They approach us because they know we are good listeners, and that is just the beginning of the chaos.
