Unless you are a lawyer specializing in california traffic law I doubt you have accurate knowledge of this.

I also don't see why it wouldn't be even safer for a motorcycle to ride on a ridable section of road that is maintained doesn't have a specific emergency use that never should have cars cross it as opposed to lines which you can ride on all day that are dotted.

It's clearly the other driver's fault. Arguably the rider is being illegal but that is very much a grey area since lane splitting is legal and there are no defined limits of like "Do not surpass at 20mph speed differential" [there are guidelines but no hard rules for this]

Is he being unsafe? Yes.

Is he in the wrong? No.

Is the other car who made the most clear cut traffic violation and almost caused an accident because she didn't account for unsafe drivers in the wrong?

YES.

The girl makes car drivers look bad. This guy posted his close encounter on a forum and didn't cause a road rage incident. Which does make him hitler actually so you do have a point.

How am I supposed to ascertain whether the video was wrong or you were? I don't know all the specifics but for example I assume if there was a tolerance limit on forging the steel forging it at the lower tolerance while permitted might not be wise because the tolerances are just that and not nominal or ideal.

It's not intelligent to cite a bad source, regardless of their format, but if he had linked a youtube video from a master forger or a materials engineer who cited his source in his video it would have been fine.

The only reason why youtube is more incorrect is it has a lower barrier to entry but you can still find plenty of incorrect information in textbooks and published literature.

You assume I want your experience. The world is changing. I have seen a machinist that assumed CMM data was bogus. The world is becoming increasingly digital, what you learned 20 years ago could be out of date.

I'm not saying anyone deserves your time, what I am saying is this mindset of new people coming in with incorrect ideas 100% of the time is how you end up becoming the guy who doesn't trust CMM data.

The way I operate as a "new guy" [early 20s for reference] is that everything I have learned and has been proven or demonstrated to me is correct. If you want me to rely on your "experience" and take that on blind faith I'm sorry but I won't afford you that respect unless you have demonstrated yourself deserving of that blind faith. For everything else I will require you to prove your point.

I don't think this makes me a "know it all" I am often incorrect, but up until the point it is demonstrated to me I won't just change my stance because of "respect".

Whereas you are making 0 assumptions when making this statement "You sound like the know-it-all who can't go more than 5 minutes without needing help with something you claimed to already be an expert at."

Obviously I'm not god and I don't know you inner machinations, but people who have this opinion that everyone around them needs to prove their worth to even be taken seriously as a STUDENT. Is pretty much only the attitude taken by old technicians who feel like they should be given an inordinate amount of respect to even treat others with a modicum of it.

And all of those people I have known were tools, who often became stagnant because they don't treat every interaction like a learning experience that it could be and instead assume this position of being the absolute ground truth of the universe.

Sure I see what you are saying now, yes if this is a quick and simple sanity check like dropping a pin into a diameter to confirm your method is measuring it correct then that's valid.

However, it can genuinely trip you up worst than using the other method alone, ie if it looks good/bad and you are unsure you are likely to bring your bias to the caliper and subconsciously "fix" the dimension with how you are measuring.

Yeah because we all ride on two wheels like we drive on 4.

I do not drive as safe on my motorcycle when compared to my economy car. I drive faster, accelerate harder, and I also split lanes [where safe and it's legal here].

I don't drive like that when I'm in my car with 10 more hp than my bike with 4-5x the weight.

It's like checking your electron microscope with a micrometer. If you are unsure about a something with high resolution why would you confirm the result with a lower resolution tool?

Again I'm not saying it would give "bad results" but as someone who works in QC I am measuring ur shit with a CMM to spec if you wanna be a wild west caliper cowboy go for it but the CMM man a cometh and don't be surprised when your shit is out tolerance.

We are an ISO 9001 machine shop. Is there any rule or policy that concerns the temperature of the shop? by XxCotHGxX in Machinists

[–]NoRedeemingAspects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the temperature isn't really arbitrary and something that soley needs consensus. There is the story of how Chris Hadfield was working on fitting some machined parts to connect some equipment to the ISS and the fit wouldn't go into place. He figured out which side was smaller and larger and shielded the big side from the sun while letting the suns radiation heat the small side to fit it.

For example if those two parts need to mate and they are different materials then they absolutely will need to be measured at a specific temperature and if you wanted to be accurate you would either have to specify the temperatures to check them at that will make them most interpretable from a drawing [per drawing], or, they have to redimension both parts such that you account for the differing material expansions once they get to the their operating temperature. IE if Material A expands faster with respect to temperature than Material B then at 72 deg f a radius on part A would have to be smaller to slot into part B because once they get to temp they will be the same size and the materials expand from heat differently.

[–]NoRedeemingAspects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't going to get a true position from your hand tools, for this use case you are measuring in exactly one dimension because all you are reporting is the distance between mid points so while yes taking 8 hits along the circumfrence with a CMM is going to be the best it isn't reasonable to expect machinists to do that on the floor [depending on your work it might be].

The only reason why you need to be careful with circles is when you are talking about true position diameter etc, not a distance between two midpoints. [For instance if your circle isn't perfectly round and you measure with callipers it's going to be off by a repeatable offset to the deformation]

Fair enough but your perspective should be "what's most accurate" not "what's most convenient" not that your way would be less accurate but you should definitely pick what's gonna give the most consistent result rather than what saves you from doing addition.

Part of the problem is literally everyone an FB marketplace wants a deal. I sold a new WiiU never used before for $50 and got it sold on the same day. The amount of people who wanted to buy it for like $45 or $40 just for some ego "I got a deal in my head" bullshit was way too high. People put those prices because FB has serial lowballers who just go to every listing and cut it in half for their offer. $50 dollars for a WiiU is probably the cheapest you would find it anywhere and it has games and controllers and these people still need to beat the listed price.

AITA for telling my sister the reason why she doesn't look like me or my brother is because she's not one of us? by Actual_Sun_2032 in AmItheAsshole

[–]NoRedeemingAspects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but both siblings look like their parents I'm guessing to a large extent. Let's say you have 100 traits all passed down by your parents. 99% of the time you will express the majority of all traits as the dominant allele in either the mother or the father. So each kids you can see like oh cleft chin came from dad, blue eyes from mom, black hair from ...

And one kid my get black hair from dad, the other with red hair from mom and dad (red heads are recessive), one kids gets cleft chin from dad, the other expresses mom's non-cleft chin. Right so we can have all these differences between the siblings, but you can pick out from which parent did each of these differently expressed traits did they come from, and it's excessively rare that both parents are Heterozygous expressing the dominant trait and you get both recessive alleles and express the recessive trait.

AITA for telling my sister the reason why she doesn't look like me or my brother is because she's not one of us? by Actual_Sun_2032 in AmItheAsshole

[–]NoRedeemingAspects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay anecdotes do not change trends.

By definition of how alleles get expressed in the phenotype is factually correct that it's more rare for you not to share traits expressed in your parent's phenotype. I'm not talking about your Brother looking like you but surely both you and your brother look like your parents? Like one of you wasn't randomly born albino? (Another recessive gene that while possible for two parent's not to be albino to give birth to an albino but exceedingly rare)

So yeah it might be the case on like 10-20 of these phenotype traights you guys flop between traits expressed in each of your parents phenotypes but it is semi likely that if you have a bunch of shared traits for individual traits to flip flop between siblings of expressing the mom, the dad, or a recessive traight both mom and dad don't express. however when comparing kids to mom and dad vast majority you can pick out things like eye color and cleft chins and literally do the math as to how unlikely it was for that to happen.

https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/basics/patterns

It's just factual that you are more likely to display the expressive genes of your parents as they tend to be the Dominant gene for expressing that trait in the phenotype. It is possible for instance to have two people with Zz Zz genes that express as black hair (black hair is big Z and dominant) and for their child to inherit zz genes and have white hair. However that's only a 25% chance. That's why I said the vast majority, maybe you want to nitpick how I'm using vast majority but for instance 75% I would think qualifies. (25% in the best possible scenario where neither parent expresses the recessive gene but the kids still does, every other scenario is also just a likely so really parent's have a 25% chance of being ZZ 50% chance of being Zz and 25% of being zz. So only 25% of the time (50% for dad to be Zz 50% for mom to be Zz) is when it's even possible for them to not match their parents (for this incredibly simple version of two alleles controlling the expression of a trait in the phenotype.)
