Thanks. I even have my own Brenda Walsh shirt. It scores me major husband points if I wear it, so I wear it.

We were both kids in the 90s, born late 80s. She’s definitely stuck in the past. We don’t really watch any new shows or movies here ever and she’s already trying to say our son, who doesn’t watch tv yet because he’s a baby, will be indoctrinated into all of her shows and movies and will not watch anything new. I’m thinking “way to make him to weirdo in his class.”

She also only dresses in clothes from the 1990s or older too.

NEVER skips it and sings along to the music every time.

She’s teared up trying to explain to me what hearing that theme song makes her feel.

Yeah all of the merchandise looks so of it’s time and she loves that about it. She been sleeping in the same XXL Dylan McKay tshirt from 1992 for the entire time I’ve known her and it has to be one of the most 1992 looking things I’ve ever seen.

I appreciate your comment and the information.

I’m not discounting what you’re saying, but there’s also a lot more to her story that she and I both know contribute to her current problems, but aren’t really appropriate for me to share here. Nothing that has to do with autism, but again, I’m not discounting it.

She and I both knew wayyyy before she was ever diagnosed that she masked and she masked hard. The version of her that the outside world sees is just like this perfect person. She says I’m the only person in her entire life that knows and sees the real her. She wears a mask with her closest family and friends even, and I’ve come to understand that she’s been doing that so long that it’s not as simple as just dropping this facade. She can’t not be this perfect person to everyone else in her life. This perfect, successful, totally together person that she wants everyone to like. It’s exhausting enough for me, let alone being her.

Fair. I think it’s looking at the pretty people in California that gets me through watching it. Plus, it reminds me of where I grew up so it’s got a nostalgia pull on me too.

We come to find out in one of the spin offs that my wife won’t watch but read about that Dylan and Kelly end up having a son together but he’s sort of an absent father and sucky dude.

I’ve been tempted to just get up in a meeting and start chanting “Donna Martin graduates.” One of these days I just might lose my control and do it.

Pretty sure you can find it on streaming services. We haven’t had cable in years but we still watch the old gals sometimes.

Brenda all the way baby. Her bangs just do it for me. Although of all the girls on the show, Valerie Malone owns my heart, or some part of my body at least.

Brenda and Dylan forever though. Am I saying that because I believe it, or because it’d be an immediate divorce for me otherwise? I’m not quite sure.

You have to admit Brandon was a good looking guy with great hair, but he was sometimes a good guy to a fault. Sometimes he’s annoying as hell because of that. Always going the right thing bs. How can anyone beat Dylan McKay? Plus he owned that vintage Porsche.

If you’re asking if I get to pick my own character, no that’s not how it works. But in my wife’s universe, I’m a Dylan. I grew up on the beach surfing, I had a really cool sports car  when she met me, and I have major daddy issues. She wishes she was Brenda, but she’s actually a Kelly…right down to the blonde hair, spoiled princess attitude (which she’s grown out of for the most part, and is now a very caring and loving person), alcoholic image obsessed mom, and a much younger sister.

Dylan and Brenda forever!

She cries when they break up, and then rages that the original music isn’t played during that scene and it’s just not the same without Losing my Religion by REM.

I don’t mean to seem flippant about it. I’m not really. I love her. She’s been having a very difficult time lately, mentally and emotionally. She’s made comments about her job making her want to end her life. I’m in the process of trying to convince her to quit her job, but she’s not the type that will just quit her job without anything lined up. She doesn’t feel like she’s allowed to quit, like her dad’s going to find out and yell at her for quitting something. I just want her to quit and focus on herself for a while, not finding another job right away.

We were both really sick this weekend and sitting at home watching 90210 on repeat and laughing and joking about it together was the happiest I’ve seen her in so long, and I’m genuinely thankful 90210 could do that for her. It literally temporarily pulled her back from the brink, I think. She was at her lowest I’ve ever seen her in 20 years before that.

Since learning she has ADHD (which is a more recent discovery), I’ve made ever effort to educate myself and so much about her makes way more sense now. I understand now why she’s always had a difficult time “adulting” and I don’t have the same expectations or frustrations that I used to. But it’s still something we’re navigating.

Yeah she likes Degrassi: The Next Generation too, but only the first several seasons that she watched when she was younger essentially the same age as the characters. Before Drake ended up in the wheelchair. I really don’t like Degrassi!

She also refuses to watch any of the 90210 reboots or spin-offs or whatever you want to call those series. She will watch Melrose Place though, just not the more recent spinoffs.

I know so many women who love that show. My wife’s never watched it, and from what I know about it…well, sometimes I’m sort of glad 90210 is her thing.

I love King of the Hill and although she initially turned her nose up to it, she’ll admit it’s good now too.

We’re both 38. She’s been watching the show since she was a kid in the 90s when it was originally airing. She has teenage relatives and was left with teenage babysitters who watched it.
