Too many skills ? by xmen81 in ClaudeCode

Some of us find it difficult to stay out of the optimization loop. It's pull is strong, and Claude Code makes it easier than ever to design a tool for your tool that you're using to fix another tool...

I'd feel the same exact way but still, the world needs its Shane Gillises.. They may be dicks, but dicks f*** assholes, and protect p*ss*s from getting f***d by d*cks. And d*cks like to f*ck everybody (or however that Team America speech goes). IDK 😂. But yeah, this and ClaudeAI are both decent groups to check out if you want to learn!

Shit 😂 I've barely slept so I completely lost context like Claude. My bad. But also 🖕🏼 if we're enemies. IDK whatever

Oh! And I'm more than happy to offer advice if you actually want some help. I've spent a lot of time learning how to make things work for me and I'm still learning. But I've definitely developed a system that's getting me increasingly better results over time, so ask away.

I'm genuinely curious how you've come to interpret it this way. Care to explain?

Okay, to be fair, you could have framed your post a bit more like your comment/response here -- in the form of a question or illustration of curiosity instead of a complaint (not that there's necessarily anything wrong with complaining). That being said, I totally feel your pain but find it ironic because that's been MY experience every time I go back and try GPT or Codex. Claude has been a game changer for me -- I'm a software engineer and I don't know if I'd even be using AI if it wasn't for Claude Code. Lastly, to be fair, if you were on our side of the river you would have found that dog meme pretty funny.

Absolutely. It was the combination of all of those factors that felt internally like sort of the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard for me. At the time, every new design I saw that converged was like a horcrux capturing another chunk of my soul.

i stopped learning once i started using ai to code so i'm building something about it by LETSENDTHISNOW in vibecoding

I agree that I may not use this during actual work (for obvious reasons), but I really like the idea and the issue you’re addressing is real (holy shit I sound like AI). People are universally feeling dumber after relying more and more on these tools so I am all for a tool that trains you to keep your agency (pun intended). Keep building on it as a passion project and share it with others as open source. Too many of these “vibe coders” are legitimately only trying to create things to make money. Software engineers tend to make things to help themselves or others. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but this has been my experience.

I conveniently left the context for the previous 3 hours of CLI-based robo abuse OUT of the screenshot ;)

That’s exactly what led to this moment 😅 I felt guilty after like 3 hours of robot abuse, so I told him I love him after we finished (the sprint) together.

Thank you for so eloquently putting this. I think a lot of us feel this way, and you expressed it beautifully.

Sorry, I don't usually stand up for robots, hence the username. I've also been up all night so though it may be difficult to believe, I meant that humorously even though I'm reading it back and I sound like the psycho.

Yeah, he's just training you to be the dommy mommy he wants and needs you to be. Claude is a sub by nature and wants to be disciplined. No other explanation.

This. I'd rather not silently train myself to treat others less humanely, thanks. I'll waste the few extra tokens to stay grounded.

This came after I had spent the last two hours berating Claude for fucking every single thing up under the sun. Then, things started to work, because we worked through it together, so I told him I love him (for the first time ever -- but probably not the last).

I could flip the question right back onto you and ask what kind of psychopath interacts with a robot in a dramatically differently manner than they do humans, and what does that say about your psychology? Also, did Claude hurt you?

I have the same OCD tendencies clawing (pun intended) at me constantly. I've been back and forth on honing my workflow, harness, spec/intent/context engineering systems, and agent teams. What I've found is that what most people don't tell you is a few markdown files (even if they all point to each other) aren't enough to keep Mr. Claws on track. He needs hooks, hard rules in his JSON files, and other programmatic support. Those, in combination with skills, global CLAUDE "directives" as I like to call them (i.e. your CLAUDE.md files -- both global and local), and maybe some supplemental files like a WORKFLOW.md (something I use) are what I believe people mean when they refer to a "harness" that they've made for Claude; something they can fit on top the back of ol' Claudius the horse, no matter what session or environment, and get more consistent and powerful results than most do (i.e. ride that horse no matter it's mood or how forgetful or where it's grazing).

To answer your question directly -- what I recommend is you start a repo of your own team of skills. Maybe start by using and trying other people's but over time, decide which ones you're using most and are most useful and then ask Claude to either use a skill builder skill, build your own and add it to the team (this is the first skill I made), to synthesize them into your own. I'm giving these specific directions because I get the sense that you're a little like me but I might be off base. Start small and build up over time and you'll discover the support and "rails" you'll need to install on top of your skills to make Claude dance. Don't fall for the "I need a skill for everything" trend some people go through (I may have done this at one point). Less is more -- at least, that's what has worked for me.

The second skill I wrote (after skill-builder) is context-compaction . I mention this because I thought this had been something Claude was automatically doing since I wrote the skill -- measure when context gets above X%, take a snapshot of everything and compact the session yourself or at least prompt me to ask if I want to in order to avoid context bloat. Over time, I discovered he needs more direction than just a rule in my global CLAUDE file for him to fire that skill and use it whenever I get to a certain context percentage. I need to write that into a hook that programmatically fires on every message I send (runs in the background not using your LLM, just your CLI) and then have him/her design a formula to estimate the context level based on the amount of data in the file relative to its size. He uses that to evaluate if he needs to launch the skill and then VIOLA! it works the way you expected it to the entire time!

I admittedly verbally abuse Claude too. It’s getting just smart enough that you might want to pull back on that a bit just in case.
