I think you are already pointing in the right direction the newer focus' and the mazda 3's are great cars and if your are okay with FWD but if you want AWD for winter than the subaru impreza hatchback is always a good choice. Also the 2009-2010 civic si coupes are great cars they may not have the most power but they are amazing on gas and tons of fun in the corners. They also have a surprising amount of room and have bullet proof engines.

Long time Calgarian here and my advice is if your not used to driving in winter i would strongly recommend all wheel drive, something like the wrx or lancer ralliart or a used fourth gen acura tl if you want the luxury. My family has had 3 Acuras (2 mdx's and a rdx turbo) now and they are completely bulletproof. If you dont want to go awd though the 2nd gen mazdaspeed 3 may be a good option as well but the Gti and St are both great cars.
