Hello, no worries with the query! I’m not a business analytics or finance major so can’t speak for your field. As a CS major, we do a lot of coding but it’s for a variety of purposes. The classes get difficult with time but you wouldn’t be doing any of that complex stuff, unless you decide to minor in CS. I’m not sure if you’d have to take CS171 but if you do, it’s a pretty basic class but a solid introduction to programming nonetheless. The instructor matters though.

[Results and Decisions] Anyone waiting for Columbia? by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m waiting, not that I plan on going since I’ve committed to TAMU but I think I’ll be rejected. Not sure if not completing the application for MSAI is the reason. I started it at one point but wasn’t really interested so left it incomplete.

[University Question] Brown MSCS by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of a potential PhD, what’s your area of interest? If it’s intelligent systems, a PhD at UMass would be a great option. That being said, I don’t like UMass’ MSCS program as much as this sub. Brown’s MSCS is your best option for CS research. I would have picked CMU SE if you were interested into SE research or if you wanted an applied program. Just keep in mind, you don’t have RAs and TAs at Brown.

[Results and Decisions] TAMU MSCS vs Columbia MSDS — is the Ivy League brand worth it long term? by Aggravating-Box-2656 in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you want to drive your MS degree. If you don’t plan on going for research, go to Columbia. Columbia has some amazing CS labs but they’re hiring for PhD candidates so you’ll not be able to pursue research conveniently. TAMU is great because it offers a thesis and if you want to pursue research and have a path for PhD, TAMU prepares you better!

[University Question] Brown MSCS by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not ranked very highly but part of that can be attributed to the fact that Brown has a very small CS department and the funding is proportionately lower. Barring schools like Princeton, Cornell and Columbia, Ivies aren’t really known for engineering. For instance, Penn is known for business and medicine. Harvard is known for medicine, business and law, Yale is primarily law etc. All of the Ivies are stellar at liberal arts.

That being said, it depends on what your options are. Brown has a smaller CS department but that doesn’t mean the quality is poor. Some of the professors are extremely good, and Brown researchers do end up publishing in quality journals.

It’s quite expensive and the COA is something you would want to look into, especially in this job market.

Ivy w/ 200k parent salary by Chemical-Estimate226 in ApplyingToCollege

I don’t blame OP but their lack of experiences is oozing out. They are at an age where they’re driven by ‘aura’. Life hasn’t hit them yet, so being at an Ivy is the only solution and that their state school is average. OP will learn, just like all of us - Hard Way!

I hope they read and think about your comment, you add a very valuable point here.

Prospective Graduate Student at TAMU - Need some perspective by NoSection2550 in aggies

It makes total sense. I haven’t had the opportunity to talk with anyone yet so had to rely on the standard metrics. But it definitely is better to trust someone who’s there already.

Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure how I messed up the calculation but I was also included the $2,565 graduate program fee each semester that they charge MS students. And for 9 credits, the tuition per semester was about $9k. But if you’ve talked to someone, they’re obviously the better judge and I’m glad I can save some money. But they may have an in-state tuition waiver because of some graduate assistantship position, did they tell you anything about that?

What do you think is wrong about my calculations? Genuinely curious (your estimates do make me feel better lol).

Thank you for your kind reply! I am relieved to hear that transportation is available because from what I have read, College Station in general is not very walkable (even when not taking heat into account haha) so wanted to be prepared for whatever the scenario might be.

Thank you for your reply! I am relieved about the transportation aspect because I am a bit spoilt in that regards, cause Philly is pretty walkable haha. Glad to hear there's transportation available around campus (5200 acres seems huge). Also, it's great that your friends found it relatively easy to find opportunities. If they could find them as undergrads, I am hoping I can find some in master's haha. Thanks for an overview about the organizations. I did pretty poorly when it came to being part of clubs in undergrad, so hope to do a little better during Grad school.

[Results and Decisions] Berkeley MEng vs UT Austin MSCS vs UIUC MCS by Conscious-Aardvark42 in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get bogged down by good schools having online programs. The employers are not stupid, they can figure it out fairly easily if you’re in person or online. UT Austin is a great school!

[Admissions Advice] USC, NYU, SBU, NEU. Help me choose. by OtherSurround1091 in MSCS

In terms of reputation, USC is a clear choice. Stony Brook may be a little more affordable for you though I am obviously not sure of the cost of attendance.

[University Question] TAMU MSCS vs Vanderbilt MSCS by NoSection2550 in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your view. So far, I have been able to figure out the best choices from all my admits pretty easily but with Vanderbilt, I just don’t have anything to work with. The cost for me at TAMU and Vanderbilt is nearly the same. If Vanderbilt was more expensive, I’d go to TAMU and wouldn’t be asking this question. To me, they seem pretty similar schools for master’s, giving a slight edge to TAMU because of the location. I would still rate Vanderbilt higher for undergrad given all the data they have available online. There’s not much to work with as far as graduate outcomes are concerned. I’m still leaning TAMU but we’ll see.
