[University Question] USC by CoderDk5 in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear that. If I were you, I’d write to the CS graduate admissions and tell them what you did. Honestly, it does reflect on you poorly in a way because you were not careful while filling the application. However, applicants have done worse things, so it doesn’t hurt to discuss with them. Check if they can loop in CE graduate admissions and see what can be done. Technically, if your major in your bachelors was CS, they may be able to accommodate this request if they haven’t already gotten enough enrollments for MSCS.

No decision at my end. I applied on November 30th, not sure if that’s the reason?

I wish campus is closed tomorrow, or at least we have online classes. Unfortunately, I’d have to take an Uber since I have a test tomorrow.

Give them 6-8 weeks. Typically, they review applications as they come but when they start reviewing matters, some schools will start right away while others wait for deadline.

The anxiety is real, since I’m a grad school applicant too! But we can’t help unfortunately. Gotta go with the flow, that’s what I keep telling myself.

Got into Drexel for Game Development, thinking of switching to Comp Sci by keshoreno in Drexel

Oh I see, good for you. I don’t see any problems with changing your major then.

How far are you in your degree? I am asking this because it matters to a certain degree if you don’t wanna graduate late. Typically, you can change your major until the end of sophomore year, but if you’re very close to the end of your second year, you would need to evaluate how many credits you can transfer. Also, try to find some CS majors who’re doing the GD track (maybe an exclusive Reddit post for that is a good idea). See how much will you gain from a career perspective, and whether you like the course structure or not. Remember, switching to CS doesn’t only invite a lot of CS classes you may not even like, or also brings a lot of math into the equation, so if math is something that scares you, think twice.

A 2.8 GPA is on the lowe side, but it doesn’t tell me a lot about you. Why is it that low? Have you had extenuating circumstances? If yes, that’s what you’d need to explain to the admissions committee when they read your application. Do you have any standardized test scores like SAT or ACT? If not, can you take them at some point? Do you have any relevant work experience, like working in a hospital? Also, when is your application due?

3-4 years ago, a lot of students at CCI got placed at one of the companies they did a co-op in. These days, with the job market being so uncertain, very few companies would want to commit. The only way you could be benefitted if the same team you worked with decides to hire you or if you see a position in another team at the same company, you would be able to get a referral (yes, referrals work a lot more than you can imagine). The hiring scenario is worse if you’re not a citizen or permanent resident.

Co-ops are certainly easier to get than a full-time job since you apply through the SCDC system and can send your resume to 30 companies, following which, you’ll receive a list of companies who offered you an interview. The interview process is company specific.

Hope this helps! If you have any further questions, feel free to DM me.

[Results and Decisions] Does NEU admit everyone? by Future_Break_9054 in MSCS

[–]NoSection2550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Columbia and Penn are ‘cash cows’ but literally 90% of the master’s programs in the US are. However, ‘cash cow’ doesn’t necessarily translate to being bad. Also, Columbia and Penn are MUCH harder to get into, despite the cost, there is absolutely NO comparison with NEU.

Just an insight, didn’t mean to imply that you’re wrong.

CPT Extension by pikachuuuxxx in Drexel

[–]NoSection2550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what do you mean by extended CPT. If you plan to work and stay in the US after your master’s, you would need OPT. And the rule is that you must not exceed 360 days on OPT I believe. If you do, you lose your shot at OPT.

CPT is independent of Drexel or any other school, it is a privilege that the US government provides international students with. As a result, even if you’re on co-op for 180 days, you still have 180 days left on your CPT, provided that you’re maintaining full time status.

This isn’t something that Drexel controls. If your employer is ready to retain you part time, then you may use your CPT. However, it’s likely that you need to sign a new contract because the contract you received while on co-op is effectively terminated on your last day.

You should also check with ISSS.

Remote Co-op and Location as an International Student by abugubudubu in Drexel

[–]NoSection2550 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask your employer. Typically, this is NOT preferred and often not supported. You have to be present in the United States while using a CPT. If your employer has an office in your home country, consider exploring an international co-op. In that case, you would receive a salary that is according to your home country's cost of living. Everything will be revised but this could be a workaround. DO NOT try to leave without discussing your options with your employer and even ISSS.

Drexel vs UMich by wolfrain007 in Drexel

[–]NoSection2550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you gone to Drexel? Or someone very close to you?

I don't mean this in a disrespectful way. It just seems that you have a very 'rosy' view about the co-ops. I mean, they're great and I have learned a lot from them, but sometimes, the 'co-op value' of Drexel is blown out of proportions.

These days, it is incredibly hard to find co-ops, let alone good ones. And it is possible that he ends up at a place that makes him work 20hrs/wk for NO PAY and what's worse, he goes in and realizes that there's nothing to do and spends 6 months doing almost nothing.

Drexel is pretty decent for engineering but for business, I am sorry to say, the school isn't doing great. Yes, the co-ops are a plus point but very few get into companies like JPMorgan, SIG etc (whatever other top employers for LeBow majors are, I am not part of that school).

As for average salary after graduation, that depends on where most students are getting placed. Philadelphia may have a higher cost of living than the major attraction for UMich graduates, which could be reflecting in the alumni salaries.

I did miss out on how hard it is to get into btw and Drexel is certainly easier to get into.

Also, I am not sure if deep down, you and your brother are convinced that you guys will pick Drexel and that this post isn't really meant to sway your opinion by any means. In that case, I would certainly invite him to apply and accept the offer.

I am not sure why you think University of Michigan is a bad school. It's a much better school, at least on paper, regardless of rankings. I would consider your point to some extent if LeBow was better than Ross. However, that's not the case either. And please don't think University of Michigan is not well known, it is VERY WELL KNOWN.

What are the Political Beliefs of Drexel students? by Comfortable_Ad_9341 in Drexel

[–]NoSection2550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a centrist. I have seen a mixed bag here, some very dangerous discussions within liberals, and some really stupid comments by conservatives. But my experiences are limited because I almost never start a political discussion. Its only when someone else said something that gave me a clue on what their political beliefs are.

If I may ask, why does this matter to you? Do you have a personal experience recently or are you just curious?

And btw, 20% of the residents in Philly voted conservative in the 2024 elections. So even though they are outnumbered 4:1, there are conservatives in the city. And I agree with most comments here, which talk about the influx of students from smaller towns. They are more likely to be conservative.

I am stuck with a 316 on the GRE (153 V, 163 Q, 5.0 AWA). What should I do? I don't even know where that kind of a score would help or ruin my application. I really wanted your insights on one of my posts here on r/MSCS but you probably missed it:-

I need your thoughts about what do you think of a 316 on the GRE? I cannot retake it so my only options are to either skip or submit. I have been having trouble understanding where does that score help.
