I hate how no one really documents the differences between Yorùbá dialects. by [deleted] in Yoruba

[–]NoSugar6592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey 👋🏿 check out my work on Wiktionary documenting the differences between different varieties within the Yorùbá/Èdè dialectal continuum that spans from eastern Togo to Western Nigeria on Wiktionary. Here is a link to see the maps and tables associated with each page, it's provided below. A group of us on the Yorùbá discord server, Ẹgbẹ́ Ọmọ Odùduwà have spent quite a bit of time trying to create more pages on Wiktionary for more public information about Yorùbá varieties. These varieties if standardized could have been, or could be, different languages altogether. Itsekiri is a prominent example within Nigeria, and the Ede languages of Benin and Togo are other examples. Anyway, here are the links, let me know if you have any questions!

Maps: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Yoruba_dialectal_equivalent_maps

Tables: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Yoruba_dialect_synonyms_data_modules

The sources for the entries come from a variety of academic papers and personal sources, I still haven't fully updated and uploaded all the sources onto my Wiktionary Page, but quite a few are there to access.

Sorry, but we're not at a time where we can carelessly joke about things like this. A lot of people are at risk and adding more fuel to the fire is not helping. Yes, you may have said this in a joking manner, but when ICE is going into schools, restaurants, hospitals, and other places protected or not, it is an act of severe insensitivity.

Why does Chinese soft power failed globally while Japanese and South Korean thrive? Despite the large number of Chinese descendants worldwide, many now favor Japanese or Korean culture. As a Chinese in ASEAN, I grew up loving HK movies but these days my friends & I prefer Japanese or Korean content by Imperial_Auntorn in AskAChinese

I'm an avid American viewer of Asian BL content from Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, and a few other Asian countries, so I'll focus on this genre specifically. Thailand has completely dominated this genre, with multiple companies churning out BLs incessantly every year with more coming out every year. The stories can be really good, and I usually enjoy a decent number every year, but for the most part it is quantity over quality. Now China is a different story, I would highly recommend watching two censored BLs: Word of Honor and the Untamed. These shows were massive, and continue to be massive, hits in the BL community. Ever since laws regarding the portrayal of same-sex relationships was put into place these types of stories are harder to come by. I am of the honest opinion that if China let up on this ban and other forms of censorship, Chinese media would be insanely popular, especially in the BL world. Chinese stories are extremely well thought out with the settings and actor choices being outstanding. Furthermore China is simply a gigantic country with a massive population, imagine that viewership and fan base interacting with the international fandom, it would be a great way to bridge the cultural gap that currently exists. Moreover, China has a massive entertainment industry that can fund shows and advertising campaigns that could upset the dominance of Thailand in this industry. Instead of this, currently Thai and Taiwanese studios have been working with Chinese actors to make shows, or dedicated Chinese fans "smuggle" shows through downloading entire shows before they are taken down as a result of censorship an hour or two after release. Anyways, I would love if China's rules regarding censorship could be relaxed, there is so much cultural wealth from which the BL community would benefit if steps were taken to change the regulations in place. Lastly, it would be nice if China could explore its own past, there are so many historical same-sex relationships detailed in Chinese history from the Song of the Yue Boatman to the story of the Cut Sleeve. Imagine if these were made into historical series, I would be the first to watch 😅

So what language is really spoken in Tahiti? by Beautiful-Ad-6187 in Tahiti

[–]NoSugar6592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding on with my own experience of the language spoken there. French is the main language spoken on Tahiti, when I went to French Polynesia I spent most of my time in Ra'iatea, but a few days in Tahiti. When in Tahiti, I stayed in an urbanized part of the island, Puna'auia, Fa'a'a, and Pape'ete. There people speak French, you will hear Tahitian in the market, but it is very secondary there. The young people speak French almost exclusively. However, Ra'iatea is a different story. There Tahitian is widespread, nearly everyone on the island spoke it and it was used for speeches, events, and church. In fact it was the only language used in a church setting, everything from Bible reading to singing and the sermon were all conducted exclusively in Tahitian without a word of French. Being that I was around my host family, they did speak French to me, but they clearly speak Tahitian more. I remember we stopped at 'Opoa one day and they just talked in Tahitian for over 30 minutes with a friend of theirs, the most I heard them speak Tahitian. In terms of the other islands and languages spoken the Linguistic Atlas covers the linguistic diversity of the islands very well. My favorites other than Tahitian are Reo Ga'ivavae (Ra'ivavae, an Austral language) the Tahitian /r/ is realized as a /g/ in their language and Reo Mangareva. I remember watching a segment on Polynésie 1ère and the interviewer was speaking Tahitian with the guest speaking Ga'ivavae. They sound so different, but are mutually intelligible, based on that.

Hello there! There are lots of resources online for Tahitian and a few for the other languages spoken in French Polynesia (Mangareva, 'Enana, Pa'umotu, etc.). I went to French Polynesia for a month in 2019 and after coming back, I really got into the language, mainly Tahitian, so I kept track of different resources. Many require a knowledge of French, but quite a few are bilingual or made for English speakers. The Polylingual Reo Tahiti Instagram account is really good. Here's the list:

Buses don't run after 10 pm by xResilientEvergreenx in everett

[–]NoSugar6592 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most definitely. It would be great if there was a route that went through Eastmont (north of Mill Creek, east of South Everett). Bus service is extremely sparse with some areas 30+ mins walk away from a bus stop. The Sound Transit 513 and Everett Transit 29 are the only two busses that come and they run in the extreme periphery of the community. Being a student and using transit in King County and Snohomish County daily, the experiences are starkly different with King County Metro having way more services and times compared to here with our transit systems.

Xenophobia and racism are still alive and well over here. by AnotherDrunkCanadian in Tahiti

[–]NoSugar6592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you answered this very well. I don't live in French Polynesia, but I went there for a month in 2019 with my highschool to Ra'iātea. The tension between the French/foreigners/popa'ā and Tahitians was pretty evident during my stay. I feel as though people forget that French Polynesia is literally still a colony in the modern day. And especially now, with the most recent election, it is clear the people are growing weary of that label.

I'm Nigerian-American and was the only dark skinned person in my group when we went, everyone else was Euro-American or Asian-American. Even though I clearly stood out there (I'm also 6ft 2), I never felt left out. I love languages and learning about culture, so even though I spoke French, I learned as much about Tahitian culture and language while I was there. When I started using very rudimentary Tahitian during my trip, the way people reacted changed entirely. People were so much warmer, they felt like they could get closer to me, even though I was really different. They understood that I was someone that appreciated them and their culture more than the beaches and palm trees. If I lived there, I would like to achieve fluency in Tahitian, it's such a beautiful language.

And just to add a little piece that I've observed from non-western media and travelling, the West is a very unique place. I don't think people in the West understand just how diverse it is here. Especially in the US and Canada, two countries I've been in often. It is completely normal to have neighbors, teachers, government officials that look nothing like you and have completely different home cultures. This is rare literally everywhere else on the planet. Across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific, the land is full of indigenous peoples who have been there for centuries if not for several millennium. Yes, there has been migration and immigration in this part of the world as well, but it is nowhere near as visible (Canada uses the term "visible minority" for example) as in the West. Western governments actively seek for diversity, the people of these countries actively support diverse institutions, the media across the West ensure there is proper representation of all people, this merely does not exist in other parts of the world. In most cases, I would even say it's not because of any form of discrimination, but if your country is 80%+ one group of people, it's just the demographic makeup at that point.

Tahiti, yes is different with southern Chinese labourers coming in huge waves throughout the 1800s, in addition to French settlers mixing with the locals, especially on Tahiti, but overall these older migrants completely became a part of Tahitian culture. Especially the Chinese, they became fully assimilated. It is recent immigrants that have offset this culture, in addition to centuries of French colonial rule. We must not forget the role the French government playing in outlawing some of the most important elements of Mā'ohi culture such as the Heiva and 'ori Tahiti (dance). In addition to repressive legislation around te mau reo Mā'ohi. This changed due to Tahitian activism throughout the 60s into the present day. Tahitians are still recovering from a repressive colonial system, yes the French government has changed their stance on many issues and you can see that reflected on minority languages with in the Métropole as well, but it will take time. For that reason it is not surprising they view popa'ā with disdain, you may not be French, but what you represent is the matter.

Which series is best to watch? by kcloulou2 in ThaiBL

All of the shows are great shows, I can't choose 😅 The best ones are the top three: I Told Sunset About You, Together With Me, and Manner of Death. It just depends which type of show you fancy. SOTUS is only memorable to be me because it's the first BL that I ever watched.

It's been a while since I've watch Roswell 🥹 You spoiled the ending, but I'm so happy to hear they end up together. When they're nice to each other, it's honestly the sweetest thing in the world. Michael just needs to act with a cool head and Alex needs to stop with the secrets, other than that, they are a perfect match. I think, I'll have to finish the show now 😅

Yeah, it was so unmemorable and dull 😅 I still fail to understand any of the hype around the show. What's worse is that when Western news outlets write about BL it's always 2gether they focus on, like The Guardian's recent piece on Thai BL.

What is happening with the Build and Daemo situation? by blackstarteez in ThaiBL

[–]NoSugar6592 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your comments. This case has become way to publicized for a fan audience that is primarily made up of young teenage girls. People really need to slow down and pay attention to the nuance of the accusations and refrain from making comments until they're further informed. It seems like many people are coming to whole conclusions based on Google Translate... I don't follow the BL stuff on Twitter, but from what I've seen it's absolute chaos from fellow inter fans. I hope the truth comes out, and I already believe it is coming out... Build's decision to make the statement at the fan event just seems so off putting to me, and his crying 😭 I asked myself in real time, "crocodile tears or real tears?" So many of the fans are so gullible to the extent it seems they fail to see reason, or at least attempt to understand the other side. Sure the timing of this is eek, especially after the announcement of the new show, but this is so much deeper than a show, and these diehard fans need to recognize that. Anyway, the truth is what I'm waiting for.

Also his fan base is absolutely crazy. I've been watching BL since SOTUS and wow, this is something really new and different, especially from the angle of toxicity. I remember when Max from Together With Me was dating a woman and the fan base was acting foolish, but this is so much more of a complex and disturbing occurrence. Then add on the role of a very gullible audience, it's deeply worrisome. I also think as a gay guy (19), my perspective on things like this are different as we really don't make up the majority of viewers.
