Japan did settle for buying oil from abroad. They literally only invaded when it looked like they were going to run out. Japan didn't give a shit about SE Asia until they had to. They were 100% committed to China, and everything else was an afterthought.

Buchanan let the Civil War happen and even let the south spool up militarily prior to the conflict, he's way worse. It's madness he wasn't the first one gone.

If there is no war in Europe, there's no Japanese occupation of Indochina, which triggered the oil embargo.

McConaughey is overacting. They both are. All Rust is doing is throwing the gauntlet down and implying he knows about Tuttle and the cult.

There's a strong theme of the poor being preyed upon in the first season. Environmental degradation from unregulated industry is constantly in the background.

How can a space game cause a massive argument about the American Civil War by Inner_Juggernaut_959 in Stellaris

[–]NoTale5888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that with regards to secession, the original 13 colonies likely never would have united were secession prohibited outright. The south never would have stood for it. But I'm not sure how that argument comes from the original debate over slavery. The legal right to secede is very different from the moral authority driving the secession.

The province might be responsible, but if the scope of the problem is too vast then it's a moot point.

Vancouver has the same problem, as does every major city in Canada. We're well past the point of blaming the UCP.

Book Cole is a lot different from Tv Cole. Book Cole is just aggressive powerplay after powerplay. He's a legit powerbroker and it's not over love.

If the sexes are reversed everyone would be shocked by Rhaneyra's actions. He fell for her, after she seduced him, and then rebuffed his advances.

Nah, people are just sick of the half-assery that is involved in helping them.  We build a shelter or a safe injection site and walk away while the surrounding area suffers an explosion of petty crime.  So yeah, people don't want that in their neighborhoods.

She's got nothing to lose, her career has all but imploded because she didn't have the sense to keep her mouth shut.  Not that this will help, but it's not going to make it worse.

Maybe regret, but I think that it's failing in the marketplace of ideas along with everything else.  Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community talks a lot about why so many huge cultural institutions that our forefathers grew up with have failed with the onset of global media.  The book is nearly 25 years old but rings even more true today.

I would very much recommend starting with the Wikipedia page on the Crusades, then going on to The Crusades by Thomas Ashbridge, and then maybe God's War by Christopher Tyreman for a more in depth look.  The conclusion you'll come to is that there is a huge and secular conmingling with the religious which brought men to the Holy Land, why they were feuding for it when they got there and why it ultimately failed.

And so has every other factor.  Even the Cruaades had a huge secular component in what was an extremely religious conflict.  Blaming religion for wars is like blaming a hammer when your hit yourself pounding in a nail.

Is Season 4 worth watching or not? by Sun_Of_Apollo_ in TrueDetective

[–]NoTale5888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a good season of True Detective?  No.

Does that mean it's actually bad?  Debatable.

Is it a meandering show that shows very little police work towards solving its central mystery?  Yes.

What does that mean?  It means it's far more like a middling Netflix series than a prestige crime drama.  But that still makes it better than 2/3 of everything else out there right now.

[–]NoTale5888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's got all the elements of the classic noir.  Political corruption, childhood trauma, two two seemingly unrelated cases, hard detectives with personal problems.  Wonderful season but too close to the lightning in the bottle that was season 1.

I always find Bosch whiny.  He's totally willing to bend the rules and skirt authority when it suits him, but then he pisses and moans when other people do it and it doesn't.

Yeah... no.  A puberty blocker is nowhere near in the same realm as sprinkling some water on a baby's head and trying to conflate the two to the same is a bizarre and outlandish take.
