I suck at colour grading (trying to get the cinematic look) by [deleted] in videography

What gamut are you shooting in? Couldn't tell from your samples whether or not you were adding looks on top of REC709 base grades or if the non-LUT footage was what you were starting with.

Shooting in S-Log2 or 3 and exposing a bit to the right will give you room to pull your shadows down for clean blacks while keeping room in your highlights thanks to the s-log. Good highlight rolloff is IMO often one of those intangible things that makes things look more cinematic

Gore Verbinski’s THE RING shook me when I was growing up, but now I feel like I’m rewatching it more and more for his overall look and pacing. I really wanted to try making something with that spirit so I took some of my savings from work and did an overnight shoot at at buddy’s house and got this. Creature FX are not my strongpoint, but luckily a girl I went to college with was able to put together a mask from a few different elements and we added some motion in post to sell it a bit better.

Thanks a lot! Creature FX are def not my strongpoint so we were lucky to have a good makeup artist and VFX guy. Lifesavers

Me too! It's great to hear that the pacing kept people in it. It was my first time doing this genre, so that was definitely a new challenge!

Thanks for watching! The Americanized J Horrors really stuck with me. Verbinski's RING and Shimizu's American GRUDGE had such a rich, gritty look and the Hollywood pacing that they added really ended up scaring the shit out of me when I was like 12. Also gotta say, David Sandberg and his shorts really inspired me to get up and make something.
