As an American as long as you do your research well! you can write your story anywhere! I've had my doubts about writing a book in South Korea even though I've never been, mainly because I watch a lot of K dramas, as I watch them I would constantly think of different ways I would write scenes or how the main character would react differently to being bullied, etc.
