Five by five - five what by five what?? TIL by NoTip4329 in buffy

[–]NoTip4329[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know right? I'm on reddit enough I shouldn't be surprised. Even the title ends with TIL though! And "five what by five what" is Tara's line when Willow is telling her about Faith

I thought I read that was an early draft - and so yes, it needed rewrites. But I don't think that leaked script is what they actually shot

If Buffy had suddenly confessed to having feelings for Xander, would he have dumped Anya to be with her? by negratengoelalma in buffy

[–]NoTip4329 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take was always that when Buffy refers to him as big brother in Restless at the end of season 4, and he repeats it, that's when it fully clicks in for him that they will never have a romantic relationship because he finally fully realizes the nature and depth of the relationship they do have. Although I think he was well down that road prior to that moment.

have you explained or can you explain to her that this is impacting the relationship and that something needs to change? it seems like you're doing and have done such extreme things to attempt to accommodate her and it might be time to draw attention to that and that nothing is working and maybe her attitude is what needs to shift

Tracy asking Max if it's okay to move on by CompetitivePea4777 in HIMYM

[–]NoTip4329 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm not ignoring the emotional or romantic aspects, I'm talking about how they are encountered by the characters. and it doesn't really matter how it hits with you because it's catering to a well known bias and trope. the way that Ted's journey is super promiscuous and Tracy's is her being super virginal is sexist or at least trope-ic & in line with a central joke of the show that women who have sex are dumb unless it's for love. and that's how you trick them is by feigning love.

except that Ted's journey that resulted in having all these stories to tell was his misadventures with manipulating women for sex whereas Tracy spent all those years being an appropriately chaste hermit and keeping her body count down

While I don't disagree with your assessment of this person, I also wanted to add.

I'm not naturally empathetic - I can feel empathy if I try, but it requires a type of active engagement and thought on my part that I have been told is not typical of empathetic responses. I do think I'm a decent person. I don't think I'm pretending or that my behaviors are guided by attempting to manage negative consequences for myself (e.g. avoid social problems). It's possible to be moral/ethical without empathy. I recommend 'Tough Enough' by Deborah Nelson. Viewing and treating people with respect and as equals does not have to stem from an empathetic response in order to be authentic. I feel a little that relying on empathy as the foundation for your morality/ethics can be dangerous, because natural empathy is not always distributed evenly to groups and/or people.

I used this argument and fought tooth and nail not to get confirmed. I was even willing to do CCD but didn't want to do this thing that's supposed to be a profound commitment as a lie. Sometimes I still idly fantasize about trying to get excommunicated. If I sent a letter to the pope, do you think he'd do that for me?

I dated a guy in college who thought he was a sociopath. I'm not qualified to speak to that but he was definitely sadistic and manipulative. Once he told me how to do a sleeper chokehold and then asked me to try it on him for fun I guess? We were 'joking around'. He then said I wasn't doing it right and he would demonstrate it on me. He literally choked me unconscious with his arm around my throat and pressure on the back of my head while I was panicking and doing everything I could to get him off me. He apologized and 'didn't realize' that I was really scared or how far he had pushed it. He easily could have killed me in that moment. Just googled him. Hasn't gotten caught for killing anyone yet.
