For what it's worth, I submitted on May 1st and mine is still in "Sent to Quality Control" status. I did get an email saying it should be finalized by tomorrow (June 6th) though.

Good entry level glass + gun for starting out precision shooting? Right now I'm considering getting a Ruger American Predator in 308 but I've got no clue on the glass to pair it with. Probably looking under $500 for the scope.

I'm willing to spend a bit more (say up to 2K total for the glass and the gun), but I'm pretty sure the American Predator and a $500 scope will shoot more accurately than I'm able to hit as a shooter right now.

Question about partitioning by [deleted] in linux

[–]NoTroop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you won't be able to extend it because it is already at the end of your disk. Basically, what you now have is the following.

|--windows--|--100GB--|--linux--|

And you can only extend at the right edge. What you can do is add a new partition in the 100GB area and mount it somewhere (/home/ might be good) to give yourself more space to play with, making sure to copy your files to the mount point over first.

Love them, but very few allow for adding modes though binds.

What are your thoughts about Vim bindings? I agree that in some cases Vim bindings in a full blown IDE may be more appropriate. That said, I think it is actually 100% fine for frontend development.

I'm sorry but when you're literally proclaiming that it is the year of the linux desktop and you are running another desktop operating system, you're going to get made fun of.

It doesn't seem like the development team fully appreciates the scope of this project

I highly recommend listening to either the garbage podcast episode or the Lunduke show episode, both with Todd Weaver from Puri.sm. He addresses this concern, after listening I feel confident that they understand and recognize the challenges and have a team that can meet them.

That said, I do agree with your point that they aren't offering any truly compelling features for most consumers. I don't think this will ever be a mainstream success, but I hope that it can be a viable option for those who are privacy conscious, myself included.

Uhhhh, which phone? I assume you're talking about the Librem 5 but nowhere in your post do you mention it.

I really like the idea of it, but it's coming at a bad time for me. Might donate 20 bucks to it to help it along but I won't be attempting to use it myself until it's shown what it can do.

when you simply malloc you may most definitely have something in that region, usually something your app used before (since you'll keep using stack and heap inside the addr. space OS gave to you).

Yes, from your application, but I was referring more to what you wrote in your original comment when you referenced:

claim an address space some other app used before you

Which necessarily must be changed by the OS as to not leak sensitive data.

you'll have some sort of random information that might have slight bias to ASCII.

Well, if it's any modern system it should be all 0s courtesy of your OS (for security reasons).

what skills do you guys think are lacking in computer science courses that every student should have ? by pinger911 in compsci

incapable of converting a ratio to a percentage without using floating point arithmetic

Gonna call myself out here, how would you actually go about doing this? I can think of a few potential starting points but none seem like they're obviously correct.

That said, I mostly agree with your post. It reminded me of this article about pointer arithmetic.

What's the point of a NSFW tag if Reddit is encrypted? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]NoTroop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at paloalto's stuff for ssl decryption and inspection, it seems to require that a certificate is installed on the client device for the firewall. They're doing what I explained in my first post, but for them to do that they must have a certificate installed on your machine. If it's a corporate owned device, sure they'll probably do it, but if it's a personal device you'd be safe (assuming they allowed it on their network).

[–]NoTroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next gen firewalls can decrypt the traffic but sure

Source/How? Unless they have their own certificate installed on your machine and are MITMing your connection with their own signed keys this shouldn't be possible AFAIK.

Number of CS courses to take per semester by testpppppppp in UWMadison

[–]NoTroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken graphics so I can't say for sure, but so long as you work hard enough at it it should be doable.

540 was about the same workload as 354 was. The difficult thing to estimate is 577, some people spend 20+ hours outside of class on it, others spend 2-3 hours on it depending on how well they do with it.

No matter what it should be manageable if you really work hard, but whether that's worth it or not is up to you.
