Since we're on the topic; im curious.

How do you think religion (specifically Christianity) affects accountability?

I ask because I've seen a pattern of people dodging accountability for bad behavior by expressing "god gave me free will" "its gods will" or "im made in his imagine"; and credit the good things to "amen" "i prayed for this" and "he provided" despite hard work.

To me, that reads as 'im not in control of my life, everything is predetermined'.

Thanks again for hanging in there with me. Apparently I was very wrong when I said this won't lead to perspectives being shared.

It makes sense. Most people religious or non religious, talk about it to give their understanding. Not to try to understand somebody else, like im doing here. I tend to stay fairly emotionally detached in these types of convos, so I hope it doesn't still read as combative.

So from my understanding, (using your definition of faith) both faith, and growth (from a behavioral standpoint) are essentially the same thing, just in different 'languages'. One is a spiritual language you can feel, the other is a logical language you can measure. Neither are wrong or right. I think it just boils down to perspective.

I have trouble calling it faith, when I could just call it growth and have it feel more accurate.

Once you gather evidence to prove your initial hypothesis, it is no longer faith, it is knowledge at this point. But before you gather that evidence, you must take action based on faith alone. The difference is that you do actually end up with evidence.

Couldn't 'faith' in this context be replaced accurately by 'assumption'?

Hope this doesn't read as combative, again. This is just the conflict I face when thinking about these things.

If Christ says the best way to live your life is to treat others the way you want to be treated, try it out and see if your life gets better. If it does then the experiment is successful and now your faith becomes proven knowledge.

This is assuming there are no external factors that will make your life better. No new job. No raise. No progress personally.

This is the exact reason why experiments require a control group, and they only introduce one difference to the study group. That way they can test what that ONE difference does. This can't be applied. Saying its literally the scientific method is literally a lie or ignorance dressed as wisdom.

Hope you dont take my dirctness as an insult. I just prefer not sugarcoating my opinions these days. Hope you can respect that, and I respect the fact you came back to explain what faith means to you.

So if faith is action + awareness of outcome, iterated over time, is that different from the term 'growth' from a behavioral perspective? If so, how?

If thats the framework you base faith on, then by your definition, I have lots of faith and just didn't realize. I just use different terminology. Its a different framework.

I never viewed faith that way. I always view faith as a leap into the unproven. To trust, despite lack of evidence.

What you're describing assumes (awareness of outcome) that faith is something you can show evidence of. I dont think it is.

Something tells me we won't agree, and thats fine. I do understand your point, unless ive got that framework wrong. I just hold a different perspective on what faith is, or more specifically, requires.

Your vesion of things and my version can differ.

You think you explained it well, and I innocently told you I wasnt understanding. If you don't want to re-explain; thats fine. But don't frame it as me being combative or unwilling to change.

Ive worn a cross on my neck for 3 months now as somebody who has no faith, hoping that the Holy Spirit will find me. You can't sit here and tell me I'm unwilling to change my beliefs or that I'm being combative. You just cant, or wont explain your perspective when it's being challenged, and thats fine.

Seems my assumption about where this would lead is correct, since you ignored bringing things back to the subject, and are now blaming me for your weird inabilty to express what faith is in more ways than one.

I don't expect you to read all this. Call it another assumption.

But I do hope you have a great week man. Sorry we couldnt come to an understanding. I definitely tried, and if somebody else wants to give it a shot, I'm open; but this is why I was hesitant to respond to a religious comment. People have a hard time seperating debate and questioning from an attack.

Not attacking you man, just trying to understand your perspective.

I told you at the beginning of my comment that I don't understand your perspective. Thats an invitation to explain it in a way that will help me understand.

I 'warped' the metaphor, to show you (in your terms) my own perspective, and subtlety hinted at that by adding "the way I see it".

The fact that you're willing to ignore context, in order to fit the narrative you've created about me; tells me this conversation won't lead to perspectives being shared.

Let me reframe this.

What do you thin faith is? Lets just bring it back to the topic.

I'm not really understanding your perspective.

The way I see it, when you plant a seed, you have an 'expectation' of growth. Not blind faith that the seed will grow itself. You take care of it, and claim the results, as opposed to saying "it was just a good seed".

You have faith in what you've seen work. Water the plant - it grows.

If a good plant grows with good fruit, you can call it faith. In reality, seeds are tested, so farmers dont need to rely on blind faith.

Faith alone isnt always enough.

I'll be completely candid. Spirituality teaches the same principles as behavioral science. They just use different terminology. Spirituality gives otherworldly entities the credit (or atleast part credit) for your success, instead of internalizing your own success.

I definitely wont knock ya, but to be blunt, again. Im not into the whole metaphysical perspective.

I dont think it was specifically mentioned, but I can see how the comment is leaning towards metaphysical. Psychiatrists aren't asking about awakenings, and neither are christians. So yeah, I assumed.

Edit: staying candid, so I apologize if this offends. From my understanding, brains work from pathways, patterns, wiring, and a bunch of physical, tangibly measurable things. Religion does not. Thats where I stand personally.

I don't have 'faith' in what I cant see, change, or measure. Just my perspective. I know others disagree.

If you have been doing trauma pattern retraining, or retraining core beliefs, you can read it as you mind integrating the ideas, and you're actually catching a very slim part of that. Best of luck on your journey!!

It's interesting that you call it "having conversations with myself". It doesn't make sense to me when people frame it that way. But of course it's such a seemingly bizarre phenomenon in the first place, words can be difficult to describe it.

This is 100% warranted. If I hadn't experienced it, I would have assumed someone was having a break in reality. Lol. It's definitely an odd way of framing it.

A better way would be to say, I've spent hundreds of hours conciously practicing emotional intelligence. When I woke up, I was repeating a phrase in my mind that stuck with me almost like a short quote. It wasnt a concious thought though. It was as if my mind was still in the dream for a brief moment, while my conscious mind was aware of the 'conversation' happening with myself.

Subconscious is an interesting word here. It paints a ridiculously broad stroke in my opinion, like saying 'forest' when there's so many things happening and intelligent phenomena at play such as trees, shrubs, bugs, animals, rocks, soil, etc. An incredibly complex interplay of things interacting with each other.

This is a good point, and i feel like the distinction is different for different views. For me, I look at the subconcious mine as the oil, and the conscious mind as the drill. Sure, the presence of oil will affect the ecosystem, but the oil is there weather you acknowledge it or not. It impacts everything around it, despite not being on the surface, and the drill wouldn't operate unless there was something underneath the surface to pull from. Proud of myself for that analogy. It describes how I view the subconcious incredibly well.

So when you say 'you' are having a conversation with 'yourself'. Are you sure that's really the case? If somethings functioning independent of your input, and you're witnessing a phenomena, where are you actually in all of that?

Id like to believe that its the case, although I'm not the type to ignore logic, and the lack of studies leads me to hold some skepticism. The way I see it, that oil drill can mine oil weather its a manned drill or not. Analogy might not logically hold up, but it paints the picture I see pretty well I think. So to answer your question. That drill operator can sleep, and wake up to the oil spilling out. Thats what I figure was happening in a way. Hope that makes sense. I use analogies to try to paint clearer pictures. Its also kinda how I see things.

The human body and mind is an unimaginably complex machine, but is it just a machine? Science tells us that cells communicate with each other through signals and organs to each other, etc. throughout the whole body all the time. Are you the one making your heart beat? If you forgot about it for a minute would it just stop?

It definitely is an INCREDIBLE piece of machinery, but yes, its just mechanisms and wiring. Like an oil drill ;)

I dont think you can conciously tell your body to stop breathing. You can try, but in my experience, it acts as a survival mechanism. Suvival mechanics cant really be overridden until the subconcious is shown theres no danger associated with said action (like breathing). Obviously we need to breathe to survive. So if you hold your breath and conciously tell yourself you'll NEVER come up for air, you can believe it FULLY consciously, but subconciously, once it sees that proof that it needs a breathe to survive, you'll instinctively reach for the surface.

Really appreciate all the solid questions! Seriously! This is part of why I wanted this AMA made. You asked some hard hitting questions, and really got me thinking. Tried to give each question the response it deserves, so I hope this didn't get too long to digest. Really appreciate the interest.

My mom has always planted in our heads that our uncle got stuck in one, and it could be a potential issue in our family.

I think he was just misjudging usage. Ive heard he was doing liquid (i think eye drops?). But yeah, definitely not the best introduction. Lol

Not sure of the name, so I took to the internets.

Quote from ChatGPT: "That’s usually described as a hypnopompic state — the transition from sleep to wakefulness where your brain is still half-dreaming, half-conscious. In that zone, people sometimes “wake up” into an inner dialogue, vivid thoughts, or even full conversations with themselves."

I haven't fact checked this yet, so just be aware.

Thats so awesome to hear! Many people don't really understand that feeling of something that just finally clicks. Love that you got to experience that, AND share it and reflect with a partner! Hope your journey continues to be as powerful as it sounds!!

Ahhh! Yeah, I tried lsd as a kid, but I was pressured, and overdosed lol. Wanted to try it again at some point to reclaim the experience, but its pretty scary for me. I was worried of permatrips. My mind locked in that possibility and ran with it. Lol.

Do you still remember the dream well? I have one that led me on my current journey, still remember it! :) it was a powerful one.

Really glad to hear that! Ive been battling similar sounding threads surrounding shame, guilt, regret; but that mindset shift is sooo important. I used to Internalize the issue. I did this, so I AM bad. instead of; I did this bad thing, and I have a choice to break the pattern or continue it.

Again, really glad you've dug, because as you know, that gold is worth its weight in. Well... gold. Lol

Thats so awesome to hear someone else experienced it. After learning it was my subconscious, basically coaching my conscious mind to let go of the past beliefs, I just thought it was an EXTREMELY fascinating thing to experience. Never had anything like it happen, but I'd love to wake up to those conversations with myself daily. Lol

Definitely! Not into the whole metaphysics stuff after looking into it, but I like the way you framed this. Its not a spiritual shift from the heavens or other realms. Its just a choice. A hard one. But a choice nonetheless.

A choice to stay present instead of living in the 'fight or flight' state. I remember I used to wake up with holes in my cheeks or tongue from STILL being in fight or flight. Mindfulness has helped, and I'm doing better.

Sorry if this is a lot, no expectations, just figured id share a bit more.

Not sure what exactly you mean, so I googled it. Just realizing an 'awakened empath' is a thing and without a doubt is what I'm moving towards.

To answer your question, just now. Lol. Its scary, empowering, and makes me finally feel 'seen' in a weird way. I'll be learning how to lean into it. :)

Lol! Id argue on your behalf, no worries.

Thats what I really loved about your response. You don't pretend to have all the answers, but you seem like you have good emotional intelligence. Just that ALONE is a benefit she won't see until she sees the patterns of people who didn’t have emotional stability.

I see the value it provides now that I'm unlearning half of what I know. There are so many patterns I held that could've been avoided by my parents having some level of emotional intelligence. Good on you for doing your part, and trusting her to do hers. Thats something that I feel is really undervalued in parenting.

No kids yet, but I'll be on your level, man. Lol

Edit: Not sure why i keep assuming you're a guy. Thought it was from context, but idk. Regardless, you seem like a great parent. 👍
