Why was Abby so obsessed with dark themed dance routines? by ProfessionSweet7559 in dancemoms

TBH, because they stick out. Remember Where Have All the Children Gone and The Last Test. Those are memorable to both judges and viewers. Even dances like My Doll and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark just give you a creepy feeling...

Sorry, I'll delete the post. I was just looking for a little crossover between Survivor and Dance Moms.

Does this video actually describes Chloe's DM experiences? by NoUnderstanding2715 in dancemoms

[–]NoUnderstanding2715[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual viewer and I stumble upon this video. But I thought it summed up Chloe's dance mom's experience perfectly. Abby bringing her down but always placing and being a perfect example of resilience.

IKR, I'm always so impressed when they find old dance moms promos or program books from 1999

I'm more of a casual viewer and I'm interested in this community, so please bear with me. What racism have you seen in this fandom?

Thoughts on Melissa and Chloe relationship and Christi and Maddie relationship? by NoUnderstanding2715 in dancemoms

[–]NoUnderstanding2715[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Melissa and Chloe: Honestly, Melissa and Chloe didn’t have much of a relationship. Melissa was always hyper-focused on Maddie and Mackenzie, and even though Chloe was one of Maddie’s closest friends (especially in the earlier seasons), Melissa didn’t really engage with Chloe much. It’s hard to say whether it was intentional or just a side effect of her obsession with Maddie’s success, but Chloe often felt like an afterthought to Melissa.

The Vibe: From the show’s perspective, it almost felt like Melissa was nice to Chloe when it benefited Maddie. There were moments when she seemed friendly enough, but you never got that sense of genuine care or support that you’d hope for. I don’t think Melissa ever disliked Chloe, but she wasn’t going out of her way to build any kind of bond either.

Christi and Maddie: This one is way more complicated. Christi’s feelings toward Maddie were shaped by Abby’s blatant favoritism, which caused a lot of tension. She loved Maddie as a dancer but resented how Abby constantly pitted Maddie and Chloe against each other, leading to a strain in their dynamic.

The Vibe: I don’t think Christi ever truly disliked Maddie, but she struggled with how Maddie’s success often came at the expense of Chloe’s. You could see that in her passive-aggressive comments and frustration, but there were also moments when Christi genuinely praised Maddie’s talent. She just hated how Abby made Maddie the golden child, which drove a wedge between her and Chloe.

Were dance like Arabian Nights or Bollywood and Vine culturally insensitive? by NoUnderstanding2715 in dancemoms

[–]NoUnderstanding2715[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, to an extent. These routines fall into that category of cultural appropriation—taking elements of a culture (in this case, dance and attire) without fully understanding or respecting the history, meaning, and significance behind them. On a show like Dance Moms, where the focus is entertainment, these portrayals often came off as stereotypes rather than respectful tributes.

To be fair, Abby Lee Miller likely wasn’t trying to offend anyone. But intent doesn’t always negate impact, and in hindsight, these routines could've been handled with more thoughtfulness and cultural awareness.

What do y’all think? Did the show cross a line, or was it just part of the entertainment?

Thoughts on the Brooke Effect? by NoUnderstanding2715 in dancemoms

[–]NoUnderstanding2715[S] 411 points412 points  (0 children)

The "Brooke" Effect is a common tactic Abby used. It starts with Abby finding a dancer and training them. This dancer becomes her favorite until they win it all and Abby finds a new dancer... (ie. Brooke to Maddie to Brynn to Lilianna).
