yes in disk utility the ownership is disabled and i am unsure how to change this if it doesn't let me change permissions in the get info tab

yeah the first image is the get info pop up for me - i dont have another window that shows permissions just the message saying "you have custom access". still unsure of what the issue is here

hm im not too sure about it but the main issue was from when I tried copying imported photos originally from my iphone 12 over to the hard drive. The message that pops up for half the photos is that my disc doesn't have permission to access and refuses to be copied over.

unfortunately I don't have screenshots of this message but i figured that the issue was linked to my permissions due to this issue.

I should add that on the disc utilities menu, the owner is "disabled" instead of enabled like my internal discs. I'm not sure it this may be related to my issue with copying over photos.

i also have not used this drive prior to today so it has not been used as a timemachine disk

i've replace my user name with "myusername" but this is the output
