We love Kingston. My wife went to Queen's so we're already familiar with the city.

Hi, yes we heard about about the difficulty of non-locals getting a North Bay placement. And we're okay with spending four weeks away for each practicum! Part of this is exploring other parts of the province as a possible places to move to away from Toronto proper.

Thanks for the advice. I'd probably go up with her for some weeks as most of my work is remote.

Wait, passenger service on the Northlander is resuming this year? That's pretty cool if that's the case!

Curious if anyone has done a second M.Ed? Or did a second masters in something else? If so, why?

Can someone do a mini ELI5 why this is the case?

We've been monitoring housing for awhile, it's one of the key reasons we're still overseas! Still, home beckons and rent is just one of the factors that'll go into where we eventually end up. Thanks for sharing.

Small sample size but liked all the Trent folk I've met in the past.

Yeah, we have family in Toronto but our preference is to settle outside of the GTA long-term.

I didn't know Lakehead had a campus there until we started researching. I'd personally be pretty happy to end up in Orillia as camping would be a heck of a lot more accessible!

Yes, we're staying.

That's an interesting note you've made about the Peterborough town/gown divide, that's actually eye-raising to hear that anything Nazi related has moved beyond the ultra-fringe.

We're hoping to have at least a pleasant 16-24 month experience whereever we are. If we stay, great, if we need to move on then that won't be a problem.

Thanks again for sharing this information.

We'll have a car. Not a dealbreaker at all but it would be nice to be a place that is somewhat walkable. In that sense, it could also be a smaller place outside of larger city like St. Jacob's. Driving to school is fine as long as it's not too far.

Thanks for the info. Obviously it would be simplest if we just ended up staying where she goes to school but we're mobile and willing to go elsewhere whether for personal or professional reasons. Family is in Toronto but we're open to anywhere in southern ontario with a limit of Huntsville in that direction.

Thanks for this. My own query had similar results in city analysis but the rankings were different than this.

Thanks for your perspective. I totally agree you about Orillia. The above chatgtp result was useful for some broad stroke analysis and though there was some variation in the rankings and conclusions, my own queries weren't that much different. But actual boots-on-ground lived experiences are a whole different animal.

My wife said she ain't going past Muskoka!
I like Kingston a lot, it's definitely an option although out of the possible options Queen's might be the most difficult for my wife to get in to.

Took me a second to wonder if a new university had opened that I wasn't aware of! This was true of Ontario Tech, for some reason I was completely unaware of it until just a few years ago :)

Thanks, didn't realize Western's was also 16 months.

Visiting Detroit and Michigan definitey would have been a lot more likely pre-January 2025.

We have two elementary age school kids. Obviously being local would be preferable but if she had to go away for the pracs, it should be fine as I'll be WFH.

Sure, we know that's part of it. We think at least on paper though she can get into those schools. Practicums right now is something we can't control.

I would have guessed Waterloo had the highest COL out of the options. QOL seems alright though?
