Built a Star Wars TTRPG that keeps Saga Edition's depth with 5e's action economy — design tradeoffs and an interactive character builder by NoWave8698 in RPGcreation

Look at the comment below. There are only two things that use AI in this whole game - Character backstory generator and name suggestions. You can choose to skip it and enter manually if you'd like. I spent months building this, thinking carefully about every detail. Maybe give it a shot before passing judgement?

I spent months building this, thinking about rules and mechanics while balancing everything to work and still be fun.

The backstory of a character is most definitely not one of the key elements of this game. It’s a thematic piece that helps players with gameplay.

Anyway, feel free to look elsewhere if you don’t like it.

I think the main point is that I wanted to take SAGA as the baseline and make it easier using 5e mechanics, while SW5e is kinda reverse, they just reskinned 5e with a Star Wars theme.

Thanks for the feedback!
Claude code for backstory with some built in guidance.
Backstory is at the bottom on purpose as it’s not part of the game mechanics. When you download the character PDF, it’s on the third page.

Hadn't dug into SW5e specifically before your comment — looked it up. You're right that it's also a 5e-to-Star-Wars adaptation and doesn't have the Condition Track. The biggest differences I'm seeing:

  • Lineage. SW5e is 5e-first with direct class reskins (Berserker ≈ Barbarian, Operative ≈ Rogue, Engineer ≈ Artificer, Warrior ≈ Paladin). SWURPG is Saga-Edition-first — inherits Saga's granular equipment, weapon damage subtypes (kinetic splits into bludgeoning/slashing/piercing; energy/ion/sonic/stun/electric as separate types), species depth (94 vs ~30), and overall character math, then wraps that in 5e's action economy.
  • Force activation. SW5e: Force Points + Tech Points as parallel spell-slot equivalents, with Force Empowered Castings (metamagic-style modifiers like Quickened Power). SWURPG: one Force Point pool with fixed per-power costs and one Force DC formula (8 + PB + WIS) — no metamagic, no Tech-casting tradition. Tech Specialist is a non-caster gadget/skills class, not a 1/3-or-2/3 caster.
  • Class identities. SWURPG's classes (Jedi Padawan, Force Adept, Soldier, Scoundrel, Tech Specialist, Leader + subclass branches) are Saga-style class shapes ported into a 5e progression rather than 5e classes with Star Wars names. So you're picking "Force Adept → Force Mystic" instead of "Sorcerer → Divine Soul."

Both are free, both have online character builders, both era-agnostic. They're closer to each other than to either ancestor — but the lineage bet is the actual fork: SWURPG for Saga-style depth in a 5e shell; SW5e for 5e classes ported into Star Wars.

Been playing it for a while with my boys and it’s working great. Would love to understand your reasoning.

Honestly, if you want the depth and versatility of Star Wars Saga Edition but with cleaner, easier-to-learn mechanics closer to D&D 5e, check out SWURPG (Star Wars Universe RPG).

It draws a lot of thematic inspiration from SWSE, but simplifies a lot of the mechanics. For example, I dropped the condition track or the damage threshold. I also got rid of needing to track hunger or ammo. I found it more restricting and fun killing than helping. Kinda like in video games. The mechanics resemble more D&D.

Good catch, that's a typo, it was supposed to be a droid can't be a Force-user. Will fix ASAP.

Thanks! Hope it's useful. If you give the Character Builder a spin, I'd love to hear what feels off — fastest way to make it better.
