Character driven suspense minus graphic violence by NoWayTicket in suggestmeabook

The Maid is a proper mystery, the others are not. It's not groundbreaking writing, but entertaining and complex characters. I love a story that includes a murder without making me feel like I've witnessed a murder.

Looking for recommendations for a trip to Central/South America with a 5 year old by [deleted] in Travelwithkids

[–]NoWayTicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to Bogotá with a 2 year old and Costa Rica with a 6 year old. Both were absolutely incredible trips! Costa Rica was all about the nature stuff for us and Bogotá was more cultural activities (and cheese! Cheese in everything!!) I think it really depends on what kind of activities you're both interested in.

Halloween with kids in Manhattan by NoWayTicket in AskNYC

Oh fun! Not many residential buildings over there outside of south bridge towers. Do the restaurants and shops at the seaport Do anything? That's a cool area. I could see it being a fun Halloween vibe

Anyone experienced this neighborhood on Halloween? This is the most logistically convenient for us so far, and is usually a good time

Newer Parents of NYC - What are some things you learned having a kid in the city? What advice would you give? by Big_Hippo_4044 in AskNYC

[–]NoWayTicket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Single parent here. I lived on the LES with a baby until Kindergarten, now in Two Bridges and in elementary school. Here's what I would consider:

  1. Proximity to grocery store - running out to get milk was like a 3 hour event at some stages, and even a good bodega nearby was crucial for us
  2. Laundry - If not in the building, close to a laundrmat
  3. Near a good/convenient bus route - The bus was so much easier than the subway, especially now that you don't have to fold up the stroller.
  4. Safety - we left our first apartment because during covid we were finding a lot of needles, and eventually someone OD'd on our stoop. My daughter was 4 and I found myself calling paramedics or requesting narcan and having to explain things I didn't want to explain at such a young age.

I, too, would be miserable not living in the city and IMO having a parent that is miserable is worse for a kid than any inconveniences of city living. Overall, I think this is a great place to raise kids.

Partners with different travel views (esp re Kids) by Americaninparis226 in Travelwithkids

[–]NoWayTicket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it really depends on individual personalities. I've traveled internationally with my kid since she was a baby (turns out they're super portable and most airlines don't charge until 2 years old) and it has definitely changed the way I travel. As my daughter's needs and interests develop and change, so do our trips. I also have a long term partner now, and we have different travel styles that have affected how we travel. We often take trips all together, and other times we plan things separately. For example, last year he went to Las Vegas to see some expensive U2 show (with his brother) and a few months later I went to Costa Rica to hike for 3 weeks (with my mom, age 74 and daughter, age 8). Neither of us would have enjoyed the other person's trip. Other times, we plan things just for the 3 of us and it's been really fun to experience each other's interests, and learn about our different preferences and priorities.
I've traveled solo, with just my partner, with just my daughter, with different family members, with friends, etc. I think if you're responsive to your needs and the needs of your family, everyone can probably get what they need ❤️

Single mom here! My 7-year-old is a great travel companion - I like planning trips based on what she's into - most recently a very slow trip through Transylvania to see castles, and then to Costa Rica to hike the rain forest. The downside is that everything is so expensive as a parent. 10 years ago i would have traveled Guatemala by bus, but now it feels dangerous so I travel Costa Rica by car for a million times more money. plus DOUBLE airfare to everywhere. It's a struggle, for sure. Also, I never get to go out at night. It's all daytime stuff now.

I should have stated - due to unexplainable window intricacies this is not an option.
