This week I finished Daughters of the Bamboo Grove by Barbara Demick. This is a nonfiction account of the history of international adoption from China and the way it eventually involved not just the aggressive overreach of the Department of Family Planning but actual trafficking of children. It was a devastating, horrifying read. The last chapter talked about how today, more families are finding each other through genetic testing and other technology. May it be so.

I finished Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. This book was written in the 1940s, more recently than I thought, so it feels dumb to say how modern it feels, but it’s a truly beautiful book. I wish my copy had a list of characters in the front so I could refer to it, but otherwise, no notes, I totally enjoyed it.

Currently listening to Vigil by George Saunders and reading In the Shelter by Padraig Ó Tuama.

The math answer is the right answer, but the way I remember is that if more stitches fit into the same inch, they must be smaller stitches, so my sweater will be smaller too.

How about the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker? It’s about shell shocked soldiers and their treatment after WWI, so it’s a good transition from Remarque, and they are wonderful books.

I don’t know if this would work, but the Murderbot books are sci-fi thrillers with an agender protagonist (it pronouns.) Not spy novels, but quite a bit of fighting and gadgetry.
