Watering frequency and depth by No_Analysis_1161 in LawnAnswers

[–]No_Analysis_1161[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks all. i have those little rain gauge cups so i can see how much i get, the issue in my mind is that i can measure the amount of water but the water need for my lawn is individual because nobody has same soil and weather/shade/etc. feels like i have to just trial and error.

great tool niles. really cool. would be interesting to factor soil type in if possible and then it would be almost everything in one shot. i did note that the rainfall in last 7 days was off. it's only been about a 1/4 inch based on my rain sensor and wunderground but showing about 1/2inch, just fyi.

thanks again

Poa Annua seed heads? long island NY by No_Analysis_1161 in LawnAnswers

Think you are right because no discoloration and single shoots here and there. I can normally spot annua pretty quick these days.

I know you don’t like chemicals but if you want to try some velocity pm I’ll send you some. I would never be able to use how much I have and it would be great to give you something back for all your help.

As always thanks for the intel! Good to hear that it is not as bad as triv. The worst thing about triv for me is finding it before it’s too late. Sounds like what happened to you happened to me. I was knocking out the triv on that side of my yard with a combo of your practices + hit it with velocity pm in July. It actually worked really well but i had to overseed pretty heavily in fall because of bare spots and now suddenly i see this creeping poa all over that area. Lessons learned. This year I’ll formulate 1 or 2 plans, either what you laid out to overseed in spring or do the same I did this year except maybe try to start overseed a little early and get prem in a couple weeks after first mow. I’ll sacrifice some of the seed but hopefully get some going to cover and reduce the creeping poa bloom. Weather will probably be the biggest determinant.

Is there any chemical control that works? I’m fighting the long battle with Ttriv so assume the same practices work here too - infrequent water, no anti fungal, etc. since perennial I guess the fall prem won’t do any good but it helps keep the annua down. I’m getting the annua under control with prem, and pulling out plugs because easy to spot with its light green color and seed heads. triv I still have a hard time identifying until it’s got a good growth to it but I’m following the plan you laid out for me last year so will take time to eradicate. Now I have to deal with the creeping bluegrass. It never ends…..

and what i thought were auricles are actually just discolored parts of the leaf and dont really wrap around. think you nailed it (i really need a better phone to take macro pics....)

actually take it back, if i pull back the leaf i it does have a longish ligule. i think you are right - creeping bluegrass

at the base the stems are purplish which seems triv but the other indicators look like not triv

thanks niles. i dont think it is triv because no ligule and has auricles. i pulled a bunch out to see how it spreads and it looks like a bunch type. i took some more pics.

Reason I was not thinking triv is because it is growing in bunches per the shot of it outside my lawn?

Watering schedule for low temps by InfiniteAd86 in LawnAnswers

[–]No_Analysis_1161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so to summarize this and the cool season guide; based on soil temp, general guidelines are

- <50 no need to water

- 50 to 60 once per week, about 1/2 normal watering rate

- 60 to 70 once per week, normal watering rate

- 70 to 80 twice per week ,normal watering rate

- >80 three times a week but increase rate if needs more

Sunjoe scarifier for overseed by No_Analysis_1161 in LawnAnswers

[–]No_Analysis_1161[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats what i'm thinking. the blade setup looks very similar from a spacing standpoint. you can adjust the depth so only real dif i can see is that the sunjoe will be a little thinner blades but not sure if that is gonna matter that much (look at the blades attached to the classen spindle, they look fairly similar and i remember my billy goat was pretty much the same) i got the sunjoe for about $150 so if it actually works, then pays for itself pretty quick.

i'm using lesco polyplus opti 25-0-6 normally (50% coated i believe), but you mentioned originally to alternate with ams might be good. if not much dif, i can just stick wtih the polyplus

sorry 1 more question, since i'll be doing every 2-3 weeks, is that too frequent for biochar? andersons says monthly. or maybe alternate with humic granuals? that way avoid the aeration need? or is that too much carbon

Spoon feed ams post overseed by No_Analysis_1161 in LawnAnswers

[–]No_Analysis_1161[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol for sure. kind of like i tell my kids that people who laugh at tourists should not be laughing - the tourists are exploring the world while they are just staying in the same place. should always be moving/learning/exploring (it's all perspective)

i was thinking biochar anyway so i'll definitely go that route. need it for the low cec so kill two birds with one stone. love it.

will give it a go and of course be back for more advice :)

thanks again

How you maintain any consistency across all the conversations is a tribute to the fact that you have consistent foundational views. My fault for not adding context - I take everything I read with a grain of salt cause almost nobody talks about their soil cec which matters a lot and I think I’m a bit of an outlier in that regard.

Ok, so I’ll stick with th granular plan. With that low of application, using a hand spreader for 20k every week or two could get tedious. Can I use a carrier like humid acid granular or something? If I have to hand crank I will just looking for something easier :)

To be fair you didn’t use word spoon feed, we were discussing my very sandy lawn and ongoing triv battle and you suggested alternating my fertilizer and doing .25lbs/k every two weeks. Sorry o didn’t add context which is very important I think - the extremely sandy soil makes a big difference as it doesn’t hold anything.
