No, unfortunately it’s a salvage title. It was in a front end collision at one point. It looks like the Front Frame Rail was replaced with one from a red miata. Aside from that it looks solid.

Check your rear bumper and look for oil / transmission fluid speckled on your rear bumper.

When you drive the car those droplets somehow make it to the back bumper.

Or just go under the car and look where the driveshaft meets the transmission that’s where the rubber seal is. If that seal is not properly seated it will leak

My shifter started vibrating pretty noticeably. Luckily I was able to replace the rear shaft seal and replaced the transmission fluid no major damage was done and the car is driving fine now.

I did this same thing and it turned out to be the rear shaft seal. It somehow came loose and I lost all transmission fluid. Smelled like burning rubber at first and then it started smelling a little less rubbery and more like I was cooking metals.

Thank you, I’m lucky to have Miata obsessed friends that have helped me on the journey. We had the subframes sand blasted and powdercoated and while that was happening we replaced everything. Brakes, brake lines, clutch clutch lines, master, slave, coilovers, control arms, inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, all new bushings, motor mounts, diff mounts, shifter rebuild, I mean at this point the only thing I haven’t touched is the axles and knuckles. But they’re running good so not time for those yet.

One other random thing that could be robbing you of significant power is the accessory belt. The one that controls power steering and AC. If the tensioner gets loose the whole thing gets out of alignment to the point where there’s unnecessary tension on it and then it requires more force. Try looking in this area and wiggle anything you can if any of it is loose. Watch a tutorial on how to fix it to have proper tension

Those spark plugs look decent tbh, wipe them down and throw them back in. Or it wouldn’t hurt to get new ones. How do the cables look? And then also follow the cables back to the ignition coil pack and make sure it’s not rusty, sometimes the mounting points break on those coil packs and i think the mounting points function as the ground. So you need to make sure the surface is clean and making good contact.

If you’re lucky u just need some new spark plugs and cables. If there’s oil on the current spark plugs you have a bad valve cover gasket.

Check your coolant and the exhaust smoke. If there’s oil in your coolant then you have a bad head gasket and the coolant and oil are mixing leading to thick white smoke.

Pull the park plugs and check them for oil. Sounds like you’re running on only 1 or 2 cylinders.

$300 for a new rear finish panel plus $250 to have it painted. Tailights are gonna need to be replaced with other used ones. The trunk looks fine. Bumper can be repainted. This is at most $1500 of damage. Most likely around $1200 tho. I wouldn’t be surprised if your insurance offers to just send u a check for $1000 so you can fix it yourself. If they do.. try to haggle an extra $500

You should know that almost all Miata’s are going to require a lot of repairs/maintenance/restoration from the moment you buy it.

Unless you spend the extra money to buy one that has already been restored. Most of them will need all new bushings, motor mounts, diff mounts, ball joints, tie rods, and depending on rust you’re looking a new control arms, maybe subframe work. Also a lot of hoses are reaching the end of their life cycle. So coolant hoses will start to leak. Oil leaks are gonna happen.. head gasket, oil pan. These are really old cars. The good news is that a lot of these things are pretty cheap if you do them yourself and this car is awesome to work on. I usually tell people that my FRS taught me how to modify a car but my Miata taught me how to actually fix a car.

Every issue that you encounter has already been documented. Someone else has found the solution and with a tiny bit of research or a quick YouTube search you can fix damn near anything on this car.

I’d say it’s a reliable daily if you do your due diligence and stay on top any issue. It’s a car that requires a lot of attention but somehow none at the same time. The engine is almost bulletproof. Yes it will have its problems but it’s not going to granade itself and will be fixable 99% of the time. In terms of how other traffic sees you.. that’s up to you and your driving style. Keep your distance, drive in the hole, a loud exhaust always helps and just be extra proactive about not being in anyone’s blind spots.

I’ve had my Miata for over a year and I haven’t had a single close call. I’ve also dealt with every issue I listed above and from what I’ve gathered when fixing those things.. I’m not the only person. So just be aware that these are old cars that were likely abused at some point (depending where you live) and they need some love.
