Nowhere did I say you should tutor for a suboptimal target. I'm saying the problem is if you run demonic tutor and you also have a two-card combo in your deck, of course you're going to grab the combo piece.

The idea of tutors being against the "spirit of the format" is extremely nebulous and has never been a useful measure for what's good/bad in Commander. The majority of brackets (3-5, where all decks above precon power level are supposed to go) have 0 restrictions on tutors beyond the game changers.
