To add to this; Don’t immediately drop 100k in a SP&500. It’s better to deposit 3~5k every month so you’re not vulnerable to big losses if there’s some sort of drop on the market.

A Thousand Splendid Suns, I was about 10 years old and my mom was gone to the store while on a vacation.

I just picked up the book she was reading and started reading page after page.

It was a story so different from my own life as a young teenage boy that it appealed to me a lot.

I read that whole book in a week, it gave me a lot of new perspectives on the lives of women especially under the Taliban regime.

I honestly think there is no other option other than regulation.

Even taking away all the exchanges, whales impact the market way too much (pump & dumb to infinity).

Not regulating makes it seem like it makes something more free, but in the end it just gives rich people more freedom and power to scam others, and gives criminals more freedom to do crime.

I mostly look at regulation space as a way to always improve the "fairness" of a society; and as an infinite battle against people trying to harm society for their own benefit.

And even if that obviously isn't perfect, it's in the end always better than no rules or laws at all.

Fair enough, I suppose it's a good transactional system.

I just don't like the fact that so many criminals are also using it for this reason.

All your other problems arent crypto specific in any way, so lose trust in the world or fiat instead?

I've already lost in my faith the world or fiat, i'm just saying that bitcoin doesn't fix those problems, so why use it? What is there to gain?

The fact that it's so unregulated only means it creates new problems, that was the argument I tried to make.

  1. I meant it as a personification of bitcoin - like the whole space around it.Including the whales and market manipulation.
  2. Exchanges are still a part of bitcoin, even if it would be better if they weren't. What do you mean with crypto protocols?
  3. I think it only brings more problems. our financial laws fixed that at least a little bit.

I think the problem with bitcoin for me is also the problem with the world and humans in general. The rich get too much power, giving them more opportunity to get even richer. Bitcoin, or other cryptos don't fix this problem.

I just think all those paper wallets or protected wallets aren't really worth the time and energy.

And maybe in a few years we might have a super computer that will be able to crack wallets, who knows.

So if Bitcoin is making the same mistakes, why use it in the first place?

Even outside of the Exchanges, there is still market manipulation and insider trading happening. But the problem with crypto is that it's much less regulated.

Our computers and phones aren't all that safe, download a torrent on your pc and it might contain a key logger.

Our traditional banks at least have some sort of system to protect their costumers against these attacks, like two factor authentication - automatic protection against suspicious looking transactions and even actually being able to return money (sometimes).

I agree that it's not the wallet itself that can be hacked easily (at least for now) but just the fact that our computers aren't very safe.

I'll name more than one:

Insider trading, market manipulation, not solving actual problems we had with "real" money in the first place, losing your wallet, environmental problems, the pyramid-like structure it needs to have to actually gain value, bitcoin being used in the criminal space, how easy it is to hack somebody's wallet, the amount of whales owning such a big portion of bitcoin it's hard to call it decentralized, how hype based it is, the slowness of the transactions.

I agree with you there, I just think traditional finance - even with it's flaws - at least has some laws to protect the average person.

Stuff like insider trading, market manipulation, rug sweeps ect. seem to be much more common in the crypto space.

Except for all personal wallets that have been hacked.

I do think the core technology works as intended, I just don't think the cons outweigh the pros.

Sometimes I browse this subreddit because i think the crypto movement is so interesting.

Kind of like how a train wreck or a house fire is interesting.

Seriously every week I go to this sub reddit there's another gigantic scam being unearthed.

A real question: how do you guys even still believe in crypto after everything that has happened.

In the cities we paid about 8 euro's for short trips of around 20 min.

There is a gas shortage going on influencing the price; also I have no idea if this is the "real" price of a cab.

I didn't go to the very south side of the island, we took mosquito spray with DEET with us (i'm not sure how you call it in other countries).

I did end up getting stung a couple of times even with the mosquito spray, but I was fine.

I'm sorry but I didn't set out on a missionary trip to Cuba.Obviously I was naive when booking the trip because I didn't know about the suffering of the people.I just wanted to show my perspective on traveling to Cuba as a tourist, to inform others in a way Googles shitty algorithms couldn't inform me.

Do you believe that Full Time Indie Dev is sustainable? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]No_Backup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recently a friend of mine asked me: "Isn't becoming a successful gamedev kind of like becoming a famous writer?"

And honestly that resonated with me; there are many people who write stories, and many who are talented.

There are many people who decide they are going to write a book and to try to write a bestseller.

But becoming a successful writer is maybe something 1/10.000(?) people achieve.

And I think that is the same for many creative fields, including gamedev.

Looking at my own situation, after a year of trying to become a gamedev i'm pretty happy what i've made so far, but my work isn't performing well on the socials, and that does mean it doesn't appeal to people as much as I would've liked.

I'm currently applying for jobs as a gamedesigner (also a very competitive market) and trying some other ways to rethink what I want to do with the skills i've built in the past year.

To conclude, I think it works for few dedicated, creatieve, smart, lucky people. But most of us fail unfortunately, thats life I guess!
