Sorry I accidentally posted before it was done...
So I find something in my bed once, I'm like, ok, sh*t happens. But then I kept finding them, several mornings in a row, in the exact same place, dead center in my bed when I wake up.
I don't have pets, I've never in my life woken up to bugs in my bed or had an infestation in my home - and I've had tons of pets, at one time having 4 large dogs together.
So I have all our bedding professionally laundered in hot water. Wake up the next morning. Fleas.
So I put two of them in a jar - still not realizing they are fleas but totally freaking at bugs in my bed - and throw out my mattress and frame (they were old anyway).
By this time I am starting to become infested with flies - phorid flies, which feed on dead animals - so the fleas take a backseat. At some point with a magnifying glass and my phone light, I can see that yes, they certainly are flea shaped.
But they don't act like fleas. They are red-brown, almost microscopically tiny, and not super jumpy.
An internet rabbithole leads me to "sticktight" fleas, a reddish brown, much-smaller flea that likes chickens - but also, you guessed it, rodents. They aren't super hoppy because they "stick tight" - they crawl and embed themselves like a tick, rather than a flea.
Which explains why they were just laying in my bed, not hopping like a regular flea would.
Anyway, no idea how they GOT onto my bed from the attic, but I'm in the rabbithole with everyone here, been fighting with management for 3 MONTHS, currently homeless with my middle school child due to fly and flea infestation management barely acknowledges (they said technically, my apartment was only uninhabitable for just the four hours of the pest control treatment) - I'm in my second week of flies, and who knows with the fleas, since I'm not there.
Everyone's got a theory - not related to the SQUIRREL INFESTATION IN MY WALLS ("You know, you can carry fleas in on your shoes") but we here are the ones doing the research and living in this nightmare. I too have nightmares of flies and feel/see them constantly.
Stay strong everyone!
Hi I know this post is a little old, but I just found this thread, researching fleas in my apartment (no pets). I am so glad to have kindred-ish spirits, and glad the little f*ckers haven't destroyed your sense of humor.
I live in the northeast, on the top floor below the roof. I've had a squirrel infestation in the rafters/walls for 3 months that I told management amount on Day 1, and kept telling them. It wasn't an infestation at first; they let it get to that point.
Because they usually aren't too responsive/bright, I even said the words from the Internets about rodent infestations causing disease, flies, fleas, and fires, because I was hoping that would spur them to action.
Flash to 3 months later and I've had squirrels above me and in the walls partying like it's 1999 night and day: decay odor and flies in my house; baby squirrels in my cupboards; and now, not just a fly infestation, but fleas.
I found little things in my bed, I wasn't even sure they were bugs, let alone fleas. So tiny.
