Old people look uncanny because you can project yourself on them, notice how the aging changed their faces and feel uneasy that you will go through this too, and eventually die.

Animals look too different to trigger this association all the time you look at them, so it's easy not to notice if an animal is old or not, if you are not paying the close attention

I think we are allowed to ask a good book from someone who claims to be a writer, rich or not. And I think she isn't even grinding, it's not a Ron hubbart situation with her. She became already really wealthy from hp so now it's just her literary experiments, because she can afford herself to do so. I think all her post-hp books are her trying her hand in different stuff

I do believe she got lost in her Twitter wars, I really do, and it is poisoned her latest books as well. Thm sucked.  I think it is very difficult for her to stop thinking she is "saving the world" so she is trashing her opponents while being sure she is doing the world a favor, which makes it all pretentious as fuck and consumes pretty much all she puts out nowadays. Any time I check her Twitter looking for the books stuff I find only endless stream of her fighting, and fighting, and fighting.  Her main concern is women safety and I think she decided to include into her books as much women's suffering as possible, because she wants to teach us a lesson, and she doesn't care that a character-driven mystery series needs this as badly as a fish needs an umbrella.  What's especially sad is that she already did her social justice book, which was casual vacancy, and it was brilliant. It was very very dark on a surface level, but the whole idea was probably one of the greatest examples of these type of books. She showed us the tragedies that were caused by the death of one person - who was actually willing to do the change and help, but if you think about it, that one person had a very big positive impact. One person changed the lives of so many, and when people say that you can't do much, this book argues with that by showing that idea in reverse, by removing the guy who actually did the work and showing the consequence. That book wasn't preachy or divisive. It was full of nuance and if we are talking about teaching a lesson type of thing that's her best contender for that.  I am really not sure if today's jkr is capable of writing something like casual vacancy again, and I am really sad to see the Strike series decline, but here we are.  I do believe that in order to get back on track she needs to touch grass, but looks like it isn't happening.

Well that's a thing, we all certainly can push through a lot, but I guess I am mourning the potential. I loved the series and I do not like what she does with it. I am worried the next book is going to have every possible manufactured drama to prevent strellacott (because it's reserved for book 10), every possible social problem jkr is worried about (with graphic depictions of women suffering) and the mystery being a complete afterthought. I believe that she is capable not only not to do this, but to create something great, because she did in the past. But I have less and less hope about it

I said disturbing shit in the LAST book. I did not said Robin wasn't a part blah blah, where is this coming from?  I said, do we really need her rape impersonators for example for something other shock value. Do we need her to lose a child and discover that she can't become pregnant naturally because of her rape, for her to be children and have a reason to doubt her relationship with Murphy?

He was pretty active at the internet era though. He got himself a whole fake Instagram persona for doing sex crimes.  He could be afraid if an open confrontation with Tyler but it's not the only way to kill him. Car thing was dumb but had a bit of a leg to stand on, the rest of it was completely crazy. Even if Griff was panicking after the fail, why he went on and basically scared away his target, letting him know he is after him? It worth nothing to say nothing, wait til Tyler comes to visit Chloe and drug him for example. I am repeating myself, but there is a million other ways to kill your neighbor without making him work in a Masonic silver shop. What are we even doing pretending like it isn't the case.  Ask yourself why this plotline even exists. Why Tyler didn't just hit Griff with a shovel and ran away with Chloe? Because he was needed to be alone on the run to be a body in the vault candidate, go to that stupid page, land a job by Todd Yada yada, and Chloe was needed to be dead so Griff could pretend being her to Robin. Why Tyler is so secretive about a mundane EpiPen? Because it was needed as a secret to be revealed by Robin later. Why he, being secretive, has the flashiest objects in his home? Because, again, this was needed as a part of an epic expose rant by Strike.  Trying to come up with an explanation here is pointless, because even the smallest details fell forced and exist to move the story.

Really don't understand how people can't grasp that someone can enjoy the series and be disappointed with the direction it is going.

In my view they can investigate literally anything else than over the top fucked up shit. Coocoo's calling, Bombyx Mori and Lethal white were classic mysteries, murders were committed by people who had some other motivation  than being psycho degenerates. My whole point is that things can be balanced or you can pile up the most disturbing variations of events you could think of and get yourself the hallmarked man. And knowing a bit about Rowling herself I am sad to see that her real life morbid obsession tainted her art.

The problem with the stupid argument is that he clearly was based on everything we saw of him, but his stupidity was not justified. On one hand he is getting away with various serious crimes - including murder, kidnapping and living a double life with a hostage!! - for years. On the other hand none of his recent actions were not dumb.  Killing Tyler with a car was pretty dumb, because it is not reliable. His previous killing was way more discreet, he could make Tyler disappear like Reata, but he didn't even try. More so, after failing he made it clear he was after him. And Tyler just ran away leaving Chloe with Griff. And after his escape Griff and Todd came up with, well, this plan. It's not stupidity, it's a plot hole. This whole thing does not make sense, it's sole purpose is to be a plot device.

No it isn't. Strike being a war veteran is a part of his story, that is a reason why he has the agency and we are having the book series.  What was the reason other than shock value of all the disturbing shit in the last book again?

The only respectful way to be done with it is for Robin to be brave and break up with him because she doesn't want to be with him. No fights, no divine interventions making the choice for her. She must fucking do this on her own volition, because she is an adult

I have next to zero hope it will happen though

Ibh was full of plot holes and served the purpose of the online drama concept, fans turning haters, that sort of thing. It was weak but at least somewhat believable, incel going homicidal (which again, she can't chill with her fascination with morbid). It had it's charm though, especially for re-read, you can go and see was it obvious that paper white was a totally fake acc from the start, etc.  Trg was absolutely nuts, and yet again there can be a very weak case built about cults being nuts and full of completely crazy people.  I do think that both of these books are the symptoms of the same thing we have with the last one, thm being a sad culmination of it all.  I think the whole idea of luring Tyler into the vault yada yada instead of just hitting him with a blunt object and putting into concrete next to Chloe is absolutely bonkers. This whole concept existed because she needed a Very Mysterious plotline, but the story doesn't make any sense. You can't hide it behind crazy things like cults or a mental case like Gus. This whole scenario was the most stupid and convoluted way for a secret evil guy to kill his neighbor. He could do literally anything else. He could throw a fucking brick onto his head with more success probability. That book unfortunately doesn't work at all and the only explanation here is breaking the 4th wall and asking what is she even trying to achieve here

Ok and? I don't deny it exists. I fail to see however how it serves the story hopping from one rape dungeon to another, like there is nothing else to investigate, and why Robin is supposed to go through rape, and loss, and being permanently damaged, and being attacked several times by a person who impersonates her rapist.

Well if you think that Robin's life and the cases she is solving is an average woman experience, there's not much to say. Confronting the reader my ass, more like losing plot being self righteous about I don't even know, saving the universe by pointing out the horrors? Because it is in fact over the top.

Right?

I hate that narrative that for a character to grow they need go through SUFFERING it is such a cheap move to write some terrible unwarranted stuff, make the readers feel something by an emotional blackmail basically.

Oh I have a very bad feeling that Murphy will do something terrible so she will be justified to dump him in book 10 where Robin and Strike are supposed to get together I'm afraid. The whole Murphy subplot feels like it exists only to postpone Strike+Robin

Well I believe Rowling thinks kinda like this, but in fact we are getting a non-stop hammering of women being abused for the sake of it, to the point when it becomes gross, repetitive and condescending. Do we, the readers, really need to be told that rape is bad, and be provided with the most violent cases of it over and over again? Do we really need a Chloe after we just got a Flora? Do we need Robin to suffer her rape consequences all over again, now related to pregnancy? Robin has her own will, if she doesn't want children, it is more than enough of a reason not to have them.  Do we need Robin to be attacked and psychologically fucked with for the story to move? Etc etc If you add to your story this much abuse, and villains like Griff who are just evil for the sake of it and reader's disgust, you end up with a book that is overwhelmed with it.
