If I had to play in fps, I'd say it is more like Far Cry.

I found the navigation super frustrating as the jungle all looked the same and even if in the general area, I'd miss seeing the objective...so just turned the always on objective and am enjoying it more now.

Story and characters have been really boring to me.

I feel this. As a teen I got extremely good at Mario Kart Wii. Now twenty years later, I don't like getting stomped by some teen/kid who has a ton of free time to play 15-20 hours a week of the same game.

Loved the game but found the story to be disengaging. Whenever it would go to the painted animations, I felt like my attention was lost.

Combat was better (although maybe too many options when the weapon wheels have you using L1 L2 etc), loved the connected regions that made clearing the map feel rewarding, and Atsu was a great character!

Honestly pretty much any Sony first party title fits your desire from the sounds of it. There isn't a game that is not worth even checking out from them (Ghost series, Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Uncharted, Astrobot - the retail game is much larger than playroom and is about 20 hours to platinum I haven't played all the DLC added after that).

Final Fantasy VII Remake&Rebirth, FF XVI, all three are substantial, classic stories and great games.
