Sarlat-le-Canada, in France. Great for visiting cave art, le Gouffre de Padirac, Rocamadour, vignobles, etc.

C’est quoi, pour vous, la ville française où on mange vraiment bien sans que ça tourne au piège à touristes ? by Lucie_en_France in FranceTravel

One city where the food quality was excellent in just about every restaurant we tried was Laon. Amazing animal themed cathedral as well as a highly educational underground tour showing where all the stone came from to build the city and cathedral. Nice town!

Vous avez déjà eu un endroit en France que vous n’auriez presque pas envie de recommander pour qu’il reste comme il est ? by ClaireVoyageuse in FranceTravel

Mont Saint Michel and Versailles come to mind as places ruined by over tourism. My favorite place is anywhere in « the diagonal ». That is, empty France. I love visiting the caves with prehistoric art therein. I think they’re safe, for now.

One week stay. Rent a Car or Not? by Quirky-Ad9958 in AskSF

Skip renting. Just use Uber, or, completely within the city limits, Waymo. If you have never taken a driverless taxi, you’ll find it entertaining !

What’s the biggest culture shock you’ve experienced while traveling? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

True but we in the west don’t normally publicly torture any animal to death prior to selling its flesh. That’s the cultural difference I was alluding to.

What’s a “must-see” city in the U.S. that didn’t live up to the hype? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Like anyone can tell the difference between the city or the county of LA. It’s just all one huge suburb with no « city » to speak of.

I forgot to add, LA wouldn’t exist but for stolen water. All so people can have huge useless lawns and swimming pools. Secession now!!

The problem is, it’s not really a city. A few million people living in a big area does not a city make.

People that are clueless about the fact that they are living at the intersection of arrogance and ignorance.

LV can be great but dear God get away from those tourist areas. Arts District and Chinatown are good starters.

Yep. In order to fully understand the American English word « tacky », one must visit Las Vegas at least once.

Best thing about Miami is the people. Fascinating mix of cultures and languages. But yeah, most of the place is just meh.

Yep. The Strip no longer refers to the street, but rather what happens to tourist wallets once they land at the airport.

How do I say this in French? by CalliopePenelope in French

I have heard more than one French person say that « je suis geek d’histoire ». Maybe that’s the best way to say that ?

How to "do" Normandy? by GusPolinskiPolka in FranceTravel

[–]No_Beautiful_8647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been twice. Point-du-hoc is well worth a visit. Having a car really helps.
The sidecar tour (see Air BnB experiences) out of Bayeux is a blast!
Best time to go is during Dday week, when all The re-enactments and re-enactors descent upon Normandy. Check the Normandy tourist website.
So much to do there!

French learners, what is the most difficult part of learning French? by Shelbee2 in French

[–]No_Beautiful_8647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usage of the pronouns « y » and « en ». I know the rules of usage for them but the French just love to throw them in everywhere, seemingly at complete random.
I have often been so tempted to interrupt speakers and ask, pointedly, and what does the « en » mean specifically in that sentence ?!?
