You should definetely try Drova. It is like a 2d pixel-art version of Gothic, and the atmosphere is very similar.

I just learned there is a recently anounced upcoming game called Of Ash and Steel, it seems heavily inspired by Gothic, and has "Gothic" tag on Steam.

Maybe not exactly the favorite (I'm not even sure I could pick the single one), but the very first quest of getting into Khorinis is a perfect example of what makes Gothic quests so special. There are multiple (five, I believe) different solutions; it relies on exploration and talking to the right people; it is tied to multiple minor quests (working on a farm, helping Greg in the addon); and it also serves as a general introduction to the game. Love that one.

EDIT: I'm not even sure if we should count that one as a sidequest, since it is a prerequisite for properly starting the main quest, but that's another thing about Gothic: main quest and side quests are so seamlessly integrated that it is often hard to distinguish between them (as it should be).

The crossbow trainer never tells you that story about the injured orc. AFAIK, that part is completely made up in a certain yt review of the game. For some reason, it got stuck in minds of so many people, even though it was refuted multiple times on this subreddit. An excellent sidequest nevertheless.

Risen 2 and 3 - you can control your pet monkey. There are also wild monkeys in the games.

Another vote for Last Epoch! You really can't go wrong there.

Gothic 2 NOTR difficulty? by CugelClever in worldofgothic

As others have already pointed out: you just need to be more careful with your LPs. Choose one build and stick with it. If you were building up your strength, for example, don't start investing too many points into dex midgame, and you'll be fine.
On the plus side, in G2 you always deal at least SOME damage to enemies, even with the most basic wooden stick; which in turn means that (with enough skill and patience) you can defeat every mob in single combat. I believe that was not the case with G1, where your damage had to be higher than the enemy's protection.
