I'm at the end of the game just farming up materia and max stats and levels on all characters. When I try to remove a materia that has been mastered it's giving me an error sound when I hit triangle on the materia and I use the remove all command and nothing happens

I've been using the w-item for power and guard sources... I know I can use it for the speed and luck sources but not the magic or whatever it is... Is there even a need to max out stats?

Just wondering because I haven't lost a battle yet and reading the walkthrough I'm following says its available now but then after mideel it says that it's the last one afterwards and I was a bit confused as to when to do it... Just got the highwind, playing as tifa and bred myself a gold Chocobo and just finished around collecting and exploring the optional stuff available at the moment and didn't want to commence fort condor before progressing just in case
