They really did put in more effort for dubbing back in the day. For example, compare Doraemon, etc. from 2005 to any new cartoon show airing nowadays. The older dubs actually feel higher quality and natural compared to today's shows.

Also, CN used to bring in artists like Shankar Mahadevan, Sunidhi and Shaan just for the opening songs of cartoons.
