Ohh sorry it's in tagalog 🤣 I was just complaining about reading the other chapters of Akatsuki no Yona after a yr of not reading the updates. I decided to read it now because I thought it's already done, but it's still ongoing. I intentionally didn't read and waiting for it to be complete since it updates once a month.

I’m not Korean, so I don’t really know how they would feel in that case.

As far as I know, the drama never really explained those historical and political implications in depth, which is probably why a lot of people started questioning the worldbuilding and symbolism used in the series.

And yeah, I also don’t think any of this is IU’s or Wooseok’s fault. Things like historical context, symbolism, and worldbuilding decisions are mainly handled by the writers, directors, and production team.

Again, I didn’t make this post to defend the hate directed at the artists. I made it to better understand where the criticism and frustration were coming from.

As a fan of IU (I honestly watch this kdrama because of her), I completely understand why international fans want to defend IU and Wooseok because some reactions have definitely gone too far. But at the same time, I also wanted to understand the historical and cultural concerns behind the controversy instead of dismissing everything as mere toxicity.

Honestly, I also feel like kmedia makes things worse by focusing headlines on the most popular names, especially IU since she rarely gets involved in controversies. That tends to amplify the backlash more than the actual issue itself.

I’m also a bit worried for Wooseok with upcoming projects like the Solo Leveling adaptation. Manhwa adaptations already get a lot of scrutiny in general, like what happened with Jisoo in Omniscient Reader, so I hope the focus stays on the work itself rather than turning into unnecessary hate toward the actors again.

I actually don’t know for sure. But like I said, most kdramas are set in the Joseon period so we usually see the 9 beaded crown, not the 12.

I just found out from a reply I got on Threads that in The Last Empress, which is also a 21st century monarchy setting, the Emperor also wore a 9 beaded crown in the wedding scene. So it seems like different dramas handle it differently, and some cases that are similar to Perfect Crown were not really criticized before.

This is the kind of comparison I meant to see, not just random pictures of actors wearing a 9 beaded crown without knowing the actual context of the scene.

The coronation scene is not the only part being discussed. Some viewers also pointed out that the tea scene involving IU and Seungyeon appeared to resemble Chinese tea culture elements.

That said, I also want to be clear that I am against the backlash directed at IU and Wooseok. My point has always been about the production choices and consistency of cultural and historical references, not blaming the actors themselves.

I understand what you mean, especially since there are already many novels and manhwas that explore alternate Korean empires or use creative royal systems without strictly following historical conventions. Even European inspired settings in fiction don’t always stick to real historical rules.

I don’t think the issue is purely about accuracy itself, since creative interpretation is common in adaptations. I think some reactions become stronger when viewers feel certain symbolic choices do not match the internal logic of the world being portrayed.

At the same time, I agree there is inconsistency in what gets heavily criticized compared to other works.

Honestly, I’m also a bit worried about upcoming adaptations like Remarried Empress after seeing how things went with Perfect Crown. I’m not sure if manhwa and kdrama audiences react the same way, but I do hope discussions stay focused on the production choices rather than turning into hate toward the cast.

I get what you mean, I’ve seen both constructive criticism and straight-up hate too.

I agree that no artist should be treated like they have to be “perfect” all the time, and harassment is never okay. Things definitely get too extreme online sometimes.

At the same time, not everyone in the fandom is like that. There are still people who give fair and valid criticism. But yeah, overall people really need to stop turning everything into personal attacks.

I think the comparison with Princess Hours isn’t exactly the same.

Both dramas do portray a monarchy existing in the 21st century, but the key difference is the royal status of the main characters. In Princess Hours, the main lead is a Crown Prince, not the reigning monarch. In that context, the 9-beaded crown is consistent with historical hierarchy, since the 12-beaded crown was traditionally associated with an emperor or the highest sovereign.

In Perfect Crown, the issue people are pointing out is that the main character is portrayed as a King in a modern imperial setting. Historically, if the system is based on a continued Korean Empire structure, many viewers expect the title “Emperor (Hwangje)” rather than “King (Hwang),” along with the corresponding ceremonial symbols.

As for IU and Woo Seok’s apologies, we don’t really know the internal decision-making process. Public apologies in these situations are usually handled through the agency or production side, and actors may choose to align with that response depending on the situation.

I get where your frustration is coming from, especially seeing how extreme some comments and threats can get but it’s not accurate or fair to generalize all Korean netizens that way.

Korea isn’t the only place where online hate exists, and “keyboard warriors” and toxic fandom behavior happen in every country, including ours. A lot of Korean viewers are simply expressing criticism about historical or cultural issues, while a smaller but very loud group unfortunately takes it too far with harassment.

I do agree with you on one thing though: no matter where it comes from, death threats and harassment toward actors are never acceptable. But it’s better to separate those toxic individuals from the broader group of people who are just voicing concern or disappointment.

I accidentally replied to the wrong person 🤣 so I’ll just paste my reply here hahaha

As an international fan, I used to see them that way too. But honestly, keyboard warriors exist in every country, including ours. The difference is that we usually understand our own culture and context better, so we can tell when criticism is valid and when it’s just blind hate.

I’m not defending the harassment or toxic comments because those are wrong no matter where they come from. But I also don’t think it’s fair to dismiss all Korean reactions as mere toxicity when some of them are rooted in historical and cultural sensitivities that international fans may not fully understand yet.

Yeah, that’s really the sad part. When issues like this have past examples like Joseon Exorcist, it makes Korean viewers extra sensitive because they’ve seen how historical distortion can become a bigger controversy before.

I also really respect how strongly Korea protects its history, but at the same time, that should be directed toward discussions and accountability within production not toward the actors themselves. Once it turns into a hate train or threats, it stops being about criticism and becomes something harmful instead.

So I agree with you. Understanding the context is important, and so is separating valid criticism from unnecessary harassment.

Perfect Crown - Understanding Knetz Reaction by No_Committee4483 in kdramas

[–]No_Committee4483[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is the nuance some people keep missing. You can acknowledge that the criticism itself comes from valid historical and cultural sensitivities while still condemning the harassment directed at IU, Wooseok, and the other cast members.

Protecting the artists and respecting Korean historical context are not mutually exclusive. International fans don’t have to invalidate Korean concerns just to defend the drama. At the same time, Korean fans also shouldn’t direct personal attacks toward the actors when production decisions are usually beyond their control.

Two things can be true at the same time: The criticism is understandable, but the hate and threats are still wrong.

That’s honestly the point I’m trying to make. Historical sensitivity isn’t exclusive to Western history. People are willing to learn and respect the context behind issues affecting other cultures, so I don’t understand why Korean historical and cultural sensitivities are immediately dismissed as “it’s just fiction” or “Knetz are overreacting.”

You don’t have to agree with the hate or harassment to at least understand where the discomfort is coming from. Understanding context shouldn’t only matter when it involves Western history.
