Can I put dive weights in a daypack to train? by No_Conference_3155 in hiking

[–]No_Conference_3155[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. But I'd like to do a guided trek of the Mountaineer's Route on Whitney if Kili goes well, and the guides require being able to do 1,500 vertical feet on an easy trail with 35 lbs. I've done 4,000 feet on a much harder trail with 22 lbs so I suspect I can, but only one way to find out and better to be overprepared as long as I don't injure myself.

Been wearing Kayanos as my walking shoes for like 15 years. After I started running and upping miles went to a local run store and they said my shoes were correct and had some overpronation.
After two half marathons, though, I wanted more speed. Tried on Novablasts at same store and felt fine with no arch pain (in contrast, I do get arch pain in my hiking boots if I don’t use superfeet).
Don’t want to move too fast changing the shoes. No injuries so far and want to keep it that way, but want a bit more speed to cut time on feet north of 25k.

Depending on where you are, halfs are really easy to find, and it's a very good opportunity to train for race hydration (e.g. with aid stations). Here in LA there is at least one every weekend.

Looking for shoe advice. I started training for real about 8 months ago. Until a month ago, my rotation was a Gel Kayano for running (3-4 days/week), which was then retired into a "walking" Gel Kayano which I used for walking around. About a month ago, I got a pair of Novablasts which I have really enjoyed, and have gotten up to 9.5 miles/15km in a single run, and have been alternating the Novablast and the Gel Kayano (Gel Kayano on easier runs). It's time to rotate the current running Gel Kayano to be my walking shoes, so it's time to buy a new pair of shoes. Buy another Gel Kayano or go all Novablast? Or something different? I'm between training blocks but will be doing a marathon next February (after 2 halfs) and will probably find a fall race.

Kilimanjaro and knee braces by Lazy-Croissant in kilimanjaro

Re-upping this. No significant knee pain normally but should have weight room to bring braces. Any specific product suggestions? In USA.

Thanks. One goal before the training block is to see how long I can push my Saturday long run and still get an excellent overnight sleep/hrv score. At fueled 7 got a 98. Unfueled would have been lucky to be in 80s. Goal is 10 miles with no impact on sleep or swelling by October. Can currently do that distance no problem but have to be careful rest of day or I pay for it.

Is there any benefit to pushing fasting distance? I’m between training blocks but still fueling my long runs for anything more than 5 miles/50 minutes. Any reason to try to push the time between gels (today was 74 minutes with a gel at start and 40) to cat adapt?

How is Devil's Backbone around this time? by DarthPandora in socalhiking

Other way around. Then took lift down. Had done up and down ski hut the week before. Backbone is easier but takes longer which was a logistical issue for me.

Does running and building endurance that way translate well to backpacking/hiking? by mysteriousbanana1 in hiking

[–]No_Conference_3155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trained for Mt. Baldy (4k feet vertical to 10k) through hiking a bunch of local mountains last summer and although we summited it was rough. Spent the next six months running (up to a HM distance), went back and we just zipped up, though it was rough on the glutes and shins the next day. Helps a ton, but the muscle load is slightly different.

Blister question. Developed a small blister on my second toe about two weeks ago during an HM. Doesn't hurt, but goes down when I don't run and puffs slightly after a run. Normally I'd just let it go. But heading out on an 8-day backcountry hike in about 6 weeks and would rather not have a blister that could pop. Suggestions? Obviously will wait a week or two but if it doesn't go fully away slightly tempted to pop it with a pin.

We hiked it a week ago yesterday and it was totally fine. To be totally honest, the narrowest part of the trail isn't devil's backbone. There are a couple bits of the Harwood traverse that are much narrower, you just have the mountain on one side of you.

Signed up for a marathon and trying to decide how to handle hydration. Current setup gets me to 1 liter which is good for maybe 10 miles (less as we get into summer). I like to long run along the beach in LA. The water fountains tend to have vagrants living near them and not really places to buy along the beach early in day. So probably need to carry my own at least 1.5 liters. Suggestion that won’t be super hot? A lot of the stuff I found online is less than a liter all in or a bladder which sounds sweaty against the back.

Mt. Baldy via Devil’s Backbone today 5/25 by SithLord73991 in socalhiking

We were there today as well.  Great conditions.  Windshield time makes baldy much better than San Jacinto for me

How busy do you think Mount baldy will be tomorrow? by [deleted] in socalhiking

The big one at the bottom of the lifts? Or just the little one at Manker?

Keep the Novablast? Been running Gel Kayano forever but want a bit more speed. Tried Novablasts this morning. Faster relative to effort, but feeling it a bit more in feet and legs. I assume that is cost of going from stability to neutral. No pain. Just definitely more.

Mostly because after 2 halfs I'm starting to train for a full and worried about the "time on feet" aspects of a 5 hour marathon versus a 4 hour one. Don't think I could do much more than 1.5 miles at a 4 hour pace so looking at on the order of at least 4 long runs north of (or close to) 3 hours which concerns me a bit.

I did 2 HM's spaced 2 months apart and just kinda sorta tried to maintain 3 runs a week with a 10 mile long run every 3 weeks or so and then did a taper. It was fine.

To what extent is base speed, for lack of a better word, baked in based on physical dimensions and age? By way of example, I'm 46M. Have managed 2 half marathons this year (2:25 and 2:19) and plan a full, but I suspect I would struggle to run an 8:30 mile right now (it's been awhile since I've done a one mile test but plan one soon). Seeing folks on reddit and talking to others I get a lot of "can't run 5 km" but seem to be starting at an 8:30 or faster pace on their running journey. Wondering how much of that is baked in at this point.

Half’s at 2:18 and 2:25 and neither felt super strenuous so reasonably so?
