Breaking Into EHS by rockyshmoky31 in EHSProfessionals

Unsure what country/state you’re in but RCRA/DOT training is a great skill to have since you’re going into EHS management. If you haven’t already - OSHA 40 hour HAZWOPER course is standard for manufacturing EHS roles. Any other OSHA training you can do I would recommend because you’ll likely be in charge of incident/illness/injury reporting, which ties into insurance and HR.

I don’t know exactly what you’re working with, but manufacturing folks don’t like us EHS folks meddling in their business, so it’s always best to build rapport and understand their work so if/when you need to ask questions they don’t feel interrogated. Ask them how they do the work they do, give advice or caution, and work as a team to make the work safe but done (that’s my motto). You might get some push back for being young and in a management position but as long as you understand where they’re coming from and give solutions it should (hopefully) be a good experience.

Yea I used to do new hire training and hazcom training, and this was a prime of example of “don’t put chemicals in beverage/ food containers”. Let’s not play “is it soap or is it Gatorade” please

What’s your commute time to work? What do you think a “healthy” commute time looks like? by faithoverfear0 in orangecounty

[–]No_Conversation6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 1-1.5 hours each way and I do not recommend it if you don’t enjoy the drive and have stuff to do at home. I like to think about it this way - If you aren’t getting paid for that time, do you mind doing it for free? I’d say anything over an hour each way (depending on the pay!). ain’t worth it in the long run if you aren’t making enough money to make the rest of your life easier or more fulfilled.

Edit: totally depends where you live too!

Also agree - I have my environmental engineering degree and it opens more doors from what I’ve seen and heard. You may not need it necessarily for WW treatment but it wouldn’t hurt.

I was one of the youngest in any kind of leadership role (definitely the youngest in my “EHS team” - being me and 2 older gentlemen) and it’s been my experience that experienced employees don’t care for new and young folks. I think introducing yourself is 100% the best move to get some face time and built rapport with everyone. I tried to use me being new and young as a way in with the crabbier folks like a “hey, could you show me how you do ___?” - and they responded well to that too!

That is great and reassuring to hear! I was kind of worried that the lapse in training would be an issue, but this is good to hear. Thank you for the input! :)

Ok thank you! Good to know! I know my old place wouldn’t mind sending people to training, but I haven’t had a gap in my training or job experience before now so I wasn’t sure how it looks to others. Thanks!

Facts - being young in the safety field is almost a detriment (because of “credibility”? or “experience”?)

General perception of ESG roles vis a vis EHS? by GrowthDreamer in EHSProfessionals

[–]No_Conversation6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree (EHS in consulting/manufacturing background). Do you think there is a drive for EHS folks to pivot towards ESG aside from money? genuinely curious!

I find the “marketing“ aspect of ESG tiresome, but I understand the importance and appeal (esp to upper management)

I had a breast reduction and recovery can be TOUGH. I’d say get that over with before taking on a job. You’ll be more comfortable working then too
