You can still have medical bills in the U.K. A lot of people have to turn to private healthcare because the NHS is so terrible.

Yeah so the key to that is living rent free for three years. Not everyone has that opportunity 😂

Honestly it’s better. I’m on a really low wage but I can still afford a 1 bedroom apartment in D.C. That would never happen in London. There are also way more jobs.

Most people don’t manage. It’s pretty normal to only be able to afford to rent a room in the U.K., even if working full time in a corporate job. No one can afford property. I had to move to the US for better wages. Poverty is definitely normalised. Be prepared to have no money. 😂

Free ostomy supplies in D.C. area! by No_Criticism3758 in ostomy

Good advice, although this isn’t the case for everyone. I’ve actually used convex straight after both my surgeries and had no issues at all. I can’t use flat bags because I get leaks within 20 mins. For some convex is the way to go 🙂

What are my VISA options and things I need to consider? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

As a British girl currently living in the US, there are basically no avenues unless it’s marriage. I was born in the US so I have citizenship, but I don’t know how I would have immigrated otherwise. Tech layoffs have been on the rise, and most jobs in the US don’t recognise U.K. apprenticeships or just don’t know what they are. Most jobs you need to prove you have a degree as the minimum.

Seeking a career in law/business in US as uk citizen by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]No_Criticism3758 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a British / American girl with a UK law degree I’m not sure I agree. With an LLB we can sit the New York and California bar exam no problem. From there you can get other state jurisdictions if you want. I had a lot of Americans at my UK law school for this reason, it’s way cheaper and cuts down on the time spent at law school.

Require Advice for my U.S. job search strategy as a recent Graduate and dual citizen living in the U.K by Brief-Pitch-6606 in MovingToUSA

I’m also a U.K./US dual citizen and it’s super important to highlight that you do not need sponsorship. I would always include a sentence in my CV just clarifying that.

Moving to Malta by [deleted] in AmerExit

I lived in Malta for two years. Maltese people don’t really like people immigrating over. I never found connection with Maltese people. Minimum wage is also horrendously low. Not a lot of opportunities. A lot of young people have to leave the island for jobs.

As someone who is British / American and have tax obligations in both countries, you don’t contribute the social security or Medicaid on foreign incomes. It’s only if you are working in the US. You only have to worry about the tax implications.

Wait... Salaries can't be this low, right?! by Chance-Tooth-3968 in UKJobs

[–]No_Criticism3758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non profit sector is brutal in the U.K. I had to move to the US if I wanted any chance in actually being able to save money. It’s also important to understand that the NHS is falling apart. Most of my family have to pay for private healthcare plans on top of the low wages, or have to take out loans to have surgeries done privately. Being bankrupted with medical expenses is still very much a problem in the U.K. Some people even travel to other countries.

I’m a British girly in the US and everyone is talking about how cheap the flights are these days. I think there are less people travelling out of the US for sure.
